How to Calculate Your Transferable Grade Point Average (GPA)
GPA: Calculated by dividing the total amount of grade points earned by the total amount of units attempted. Grade Points: Each letter grade is worth points (A=4; B=3; C=2; D=1; F=0). Those points are multiplied by the number of units a class is worth. Example: You earn an “A” (4 points) in a 3 unit class = 4x3=12 grade points. Units:Attempted units are all classes with letter grades A-F. Completed units are any classes with letter grades A-D, and Pass (P). Do not calculate “W”, “I”, “NP”, “IP”, or “D” & “F” grades that have been repeated. Transferable Units & Grade Points: #1-99 (CSU & UC) and #100-199 (CSU only) on the IVC/Saddleback transcripts; #s vary for private and out-of-state institutions Definitions
Attempted units: 19 Completed units: 12.5 Grade points: 42 Transferable GPA: 42 divided by 19 = 2.21
For the CSU application, calculate each school’s attempted units, completed units, grade points, and GPA individually Then add attempted units from all schools and divide by total grade points from all schools for a cumulative GPA Remember to only count transferable units and grade points!
