Africa is the world's second largest and second most populous continent, after Asia. At about 30.2 million km² (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4% of the total land area.With 1.0 billion people (as of 2009, see table) in 61 territories, it accounts for about 14.72% of the world's humanpopulation.
What is African Literature? • refers to literature of and from Africa. • consists of a body of work in different languages and various genres, ranging from oral literature to literature written in colonial language.
James Mercer Langston Hughes (February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967) was an American with African ethnicity poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist. He was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form jazz poetry. Hughes is best known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance. He famously wrote about the period that "Harlem was in vogue“ First published in The Crisis in 1921, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers", which became Hughes's signature poem, was collected in his first book of poetry The Weary Blues (1926).
