  2. Performance Objectives • Participants will understand the • meaning of security • Participants will understand chain of command • Participants will know how staff communicate • Participants will understand elements of key • control

  3. MEANING OF SECURITY • To prevent offenders or students from escaping. • To maintain peace and order within the facility. • To prevent injury to any person.

  4. Please review the following items which can be found in a correctional facility. Ask yourself, “How could these items be used as a threat to safety and security?”

  5. Answer… All the items can be altered and used in a variety of ways to jeopardize safety and security.

  6. Connection between security & communication To function properly, someone has to be in charge at all times This is necessary for both routine and crisis situations Chain of Command

  7. Interpersonal conversations Telephones Intercoms Hand-held radios Written correspondence (i.e. logs, reports) Gestures, body language Ways for Correctional Staff to Communicate Connection Between Security & Communication

  8. Elements of Key Control • Avoid dropping, never throw or slide keys along the floor • Know the number of keys in your possession • Keep facility keys secured

  9. Elements of Key Control • Know what locks all keys operate • Don’t leave padlocks on hasps in an unlocked position • If a key is lost or broken… verbally notify supervisor immediately and follow up with a written report • Know key control procedures at your facility
