  3. What is a direct object • Tells who or what is receiving the action of the subject. • The direct object always comes in the predicate after the action verb. • Not all sentences can have a direct object: • Jonas and Lilly both nodded sympathetically as well. • They danced beautifully.

  4. That cat ate food. • The teacher graded papers. • The mouse clicked the screen • The machine cooled the drinks • The funny dog ate garbage. • The slow microwave cooked food.

  5. A Trick to Identifying Direct Object • Find the action/predicate • Find the subject • Ask who or what did the simple predicate: • Henry and Elliot played soccer • subject: Henry, Elliot • action: played • What did Henry and Elliot play? Soccer=direct object

Simple direct object vs. direct object • Simple direct object is noun that conveys what is receiving the action of the sentence. • The whole direct object is all of the words that show what is receiving the action: • Example: • They began a simple game of catch. • Simple d.o. game • Full d.o. simple game of catch.

  8. Write the subject, predicate and direct object. • He hung his head, trembled a great deal and was still completely stunned.
