Reading an EKG • EKGs have 3 deflections (waves) • 1st: P wave: ~ 0.08s; occurs from depolarization from SA node through atria
2nd: QRS complex: ~ 0.08s; occurs from depolarization of ventricles, right before ventricular systole
3rd: T wave: ~.16s; occurs from repolarization of ventricles
Uses of EKGs • Detecting arrhythmias (irregular heart beats) • Tachycardia: significantly increased heart rate • Brachycardia: significantly decreased heart rate
