  2. Electrocardiograph • Records electrical activity of cardiac muscle • Graph showing all action potentials generated by nodal & contractile cells

  3. Reading an EKG • EKGs have 3 deflections (waves) • 1st: P wave: ~ 0.08s; occurs from depolarization from SA node through atria

  4. 2nd: QRS complex: ~ 0.08s; occurs from depolarization of ventricles, right before ventricular systole

  5. 3rd: T wave: ~.16s; occurs from repolarization of ventricles

  6. Uses of EKGs • Detecting arrhythmias (irregular heart beats) • Tachycardia: significantly increased heart rate • Brachycardia: significantly decreased heart rate
