Deuteronomy (Greek for 2nd Law)The Law and Love • As a literary device, the writer sets story in the framework of three sermons by Moses as they stand on the plains of Moab poised to cross the Jordan River and enter the Promised Land • Read in-class from paragraph two on left column of page 85 to “Keeping the Law” on page 86 • Moses on Keeping the Law • Moses uses a different version 0f 10 Commandments than that cited in Book of Exodus

Specific of this 2nd Law • Every 7 years forgive debts • Slaves must be released after 6 years • Can charge interest on a loan to a foreigner but not to an Israelite • Israelites may not be sold into slavery; anyone who does so will be put to death • Millstones owned by the poor may not be taken in pledge for a loan lest they be unable to make bread • Parents & children may not be punished for one another’s crime

Reform Before the Babylonian Exile • An old “Book of the Law” was discovered in the temple in Jerusalem, part of the kingdom of Judah, during routine repairs. • Its scrolls forbid the type of contamination of Jewish culture that had occurred with worship of the neighbors’ false gods • The king of Judah, Josiah, tried to rally his people back to their Covenant with God made at Mt. Sinai but failed • This book was probably the source of material for author of Deuteronomy
