Fiction • not true • canincludethings that could happen • characters can seem real or imaginary • is read for enjoyment Non-Fiction • is true • includes facts that can be checked and proven • characters are real people • is read to gather information
Fiction Genres • Realistic fiction • Historical fiction • Mystery • Science fiction • Fantasy • Traditional literature • Poetry
Realistic Fiction • characters act like people you know • events could happen in real life • character’s feelings and behaviors are like real life • character tries to solve a problem
Historical Fiction • happens in a certain time in the past • includes historical events • Includes real historical figures and settings • centered around an historical situation or event
Mystery • focuses on an unknown • characters investigate a wrongdoing • centered around a person employed to obtain secret information • character solves a puzzling event, situation, or crime
ScienceFiction • uses science and technology of the future • settings: • in the future • in space • a different planet • in a different universe or dimension
Fantasy • animals act like people • characters can have special powers • includes imaginary animals • can have a good vs. evil conflict
TraditionalLiterature • may teach a lesson • exaggerates a person’s bravery or powers • setting is in the past • considered part of the history or culture of a group of people • magic is used to solve a problem
Poetry • tells a story in verse • may have rhythm (beat) • can rhyme • uses describing or exciting words • is imaginative and creative
