Foundational Ideas • One of the most salient characteristics of a struggling reader is dysfluency. Struggling readers typically sound terrible when they read aloud. Why? • they are reading far too difficult texts • they have developed deeply ingrained habits of reading slowly without expression DPS Early Language & Literacy Certificate - Course 1
Foundational Ideas • Six dimensions of fluency • Pausing: punctuation • Phrasing: like talking, reflect writer’s meaning • Intonation: rising and falling tones of voice; rhythm • Stress: emphasis • Pace: speed • Integration: putting it all together– shows evidence of understanding DPS Early Language & Literacy Certificate - Course 1
Watch a Reader • Handout: Lucky Goes to Dog School – level 7 • pg. 8-11 • DVD: James (Time:3:05-3:45) • Location on DVD: Individual, Observing & Analyzing • Overall, how did James sound? • Listen again. DPS Early Language & Literacy Certificate - Course 1

So… • What is the relationship between fluency and comprehension? DPS Early Language & Literacy Certificate - Course 1
Foundational Ideas • Pausing, phrasing, intonation, stress & integration cause AND demonstrate comprehension • Pace is a by-product of all of the above. DPS Early Language & Literacy Certificate - Course 1
Foundational Ideas • Struggling readers can only develop fluency by reading fluently! • What does that mean for our teaching? DPS Early Language & Literacy Certificate - Course 1
Foundational Ideas • With leveled texts and powerful teaching, there is NO REASON for the struggling group to sound different from the high-progress group! • The casual observer should not be able to detect that they are struggling readers. DPS Early Language & Literacy Certificate - Course 1
Foundational Ideas • Fluency is HIGHLY DEPENDENT on the type of text the reader is trying to process • fiction vs. nonfiction • pleasure vs. new learning • independent vs. instructional DPS Early Language & Literacy Certificate - Course 1
Table Talk • So, when is fluency taught during the Guided Reading Plus lesson? DPS Early Language & Literacy Certificate - Course 1
