Introduction to Castles • The first castle was built in 1066, called Castle Dyenevor when the Normans invaded Scotland. Building castles then lasted for nearly 500 years, until they were of no need.
Castles in the Middle Ages • During the Middle Ages, it was popular for the rich to have castles. Most were built near rivers for guarding coastlines or getting a good waters supply.
Crusader Castles • One of the most famous crusader castles is Krak des Chevaliers • It was built by warrior monks when Crusaders were fighting Saracens
The Kremlin Built in Moscow, and was originally built to house a church palace and other important buildings.
Amber Palace • The amber palace was built in the 1500s by a local ruler in Rajusthan in India.
Fort Delaware • In 1859, Fort Delaware was built as a fortress in the USA during the American civil war. It’s the closest thing to a real castle in America.
Himeji Castle • Himeji castle was built in Japan, in 1609, and was home to elite Japanese knights known as Samurai.
Carcassonne Castle • Built in the twelve and thirteen centuries, in France. This style of castle, with roofs capping each tower is typical of castles all over mainland Europe. It s also the style copied by Walt Disney.
Benthiem Castle • Was built in Germany, Lower Saxoy in 1116. The base wall is 5 metres thick and it has a torture chamber. I is high and well defended.
El Real De Manzanares • Built in Spain, in 1475. The style is called Moorish, named after Muslim Arabs called moors.
