Pica Greg Ritchie
Major Symptoms • Persistent eating of nonnutritive substances for a period of at least one month • Does not meet the criteria for either having autism, schizophrenia, or Kleine-Levin syndrome • The eating behavior is not culturally sanctioned • If the eating behavior occurs exclusively during the course of another mental disorder (e.g., intellectual disability, pervasive developmental disorder, schizophrenia), it is sufficiently severe to warrant independent clinical attention
Major Causes • Mineral deficiency (such as iron) • Deficiency of minerals causes the body to crave missing nutrients • Obsessive Compulsive tendencies
Percentage of Population • Typically around 8% • Occasionally affects pregnant women
Treatment Methods • Treatment should first address any missing nutrients or other medical problem • Behavioral or environmental changes • Changes in diet • Positive reinforcement for eating normal foods
Remember kids, eat your vegetables, not miscellaneous objects!
