3. Cleaner Production Cleaner production (CP) is the continuous application of an integrated preventive environmental strategy applied to processes, products and services to increase eco-efficiency and reduce the risk to humans and the environment.
4. CP for production processes : For production processes, CP aims:
To reduce the consumption of raw materials and energy used in production
To eliminate - as far as possible - the use of toxic and dangerous materials
To reduce at source the quantity and toxicity of all emissions and waste generated and released
5. CP for products For products, Cleaner Production aims to reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of products:
Over their entire life cycles...
From raw materials extraction, through manufacturing and use, to the ultimate disposal of the product
6. CP for services : For services, Cleaner Production implies incorporating environmental concerns into the design and delivery of services
Not just
“Are we doing things right?”
but rather
“Are we doing the right things,”
and
“Are we doing them in the right way? ”
7. CP as a four-in-one tool A management tool
An economic tool
An environmental tool
A quality improvement tool
Used also as safety and health tool
CP represents a win-win strategy both for the company and the environment.
8. Other related concepts Eco-efficiency
Waste minimization
Pollution prevention
Green productivity
Cleaner production = pollution prevention = waste minimization = ecoefficiency
For businesses, these concepts mean practically the same thing
9. International Methodologies UNIDO/UNEP – spread around the world, and adapted by each country
GTZ – profitable environmental management
Eco-efficiency – WBCSD
Pollution Prevention – USA; USAID
Clean Technologies - UE
10. Cleaner Production and other concepts
11. Cleaner Production: an integrated approach
12. CP - three common misconceptions CP is not restricted to industry or to production;
It has been successfully applied in the service sector and in municipal programs, schools, health services, commerce, hotels, roads.
13. CP - three common misconceptions CP is not an exclusively technical concept, i.e. it is not the equivalent of ‘Clean Technologies’.
CP involves a change in attitudes and management practices, the application of available know-how and the improvement or modification of technologies
14. CP - three common misconceptions CP does not have to be expensive or involve major changes in technology
The introduction of good housekeeping practices can save an average of 10–15% in energy and 15-20% in water consumption, with little or no investment required
18.
Pollution in a production line is the result of management inefficiency
Waste generation is a raw material and energy loss
It is cheaper to avoid than to treat and to dispose
