  1. The Middle Ages • Please take 2-3 minutes to write down what you know about the European Middle Ages. Minimum two sentences.

  2. Infer (verb) • 1. to derive by reasoning; conclude or judge from premises or evidence: They inferred his displeasure from his cool tone of voice. • 2. to guess; speculate; surmise.

  3. What was Europe like in the Middle Ages 500-1500 CE? Take a minute to look at the statements/pictures in each slide as I show them to you Discuss with your desk partner what you would “infer” from each slide—in other words what does it tell you about what life was like in the Middle Ages? Then write down what you think it signifies in 1-2 sentences-come up with one answer for each pair

  4. Rome Rome Rome Rome Rome Rome • At its height as the capital of the Roman Empire, Rome was a city of 1 million—by 900 AD, it had perhaps 10,000 people.

  5. In 1400 20,000 people lived in Cologne, the largest city in Germany at the time. The population of Nanjing in China was 500K-1 million

  6. Urban living- Middle Ages style • In 1420 and 1438, packs of wolves invaded Paris, France, the largest city in Europe.

  7. During the Middle Ages, 80-90 percent of the world’s population lived in small villages and made their living farming the land. These people were called serfs and they rarely travelled more than a few miles from their homes.

  8. Libraries: who was doing their summer reading? In the 1300s, libraries in Baghdad (not in Europe, but in the Islamic World) contained 400,000 books. Most libraries in Europe had only several hundred books.

  9. Long before the Europeans, Muslim and Chinese doctors: • learned to use sedatives • pioneered the use of antiseptics to clean wounds • used sutures to bind wounds • Described how blood circulated in the body • Used eyeglasses • Practiced vaccination/innoculation against disease

  10. Size of Chinese ship • Look at the size of the Chinese ship compared to the European one like the one Christopher Columbus sailed, what does it tell you?

  11. 6. The Black Plague • During the mid 1300s, 1 out of every 3 people in Europe died of the Black Plague.

  13. In 1095 Pope Urban II set off 200 years of Crusades against Muslims in the Holy Land

  16. By 1400 Europe was divided into hundreds of separate political units including city-states, duchies (ruled by a duke), kingdoms, bishoprics (ruled by a bishop), plus a Muslim Caliphate (kingdom) in Spain.

  17. Putting it together • Using the data you have gathered write a paragraph describing life in the Middle Ages. Please include your thoughts on: • Where did most people live and what did they do for a living. • The state of medical/technological advancement • The level of literacy/education • The status and influence of the Church • How unified was Europe politically
