CEN 4021 Class 15 – 03/02 Organization of Process Review Class 14 Processes Standards Process Map Configuration Management Introduction and Education
Recruiting and Hiring S/w Personnel • Once the organizational positions are outlined, the s/w project management needs to fill open positions. • The actual hiring of the employees starts with having a clear definition of the open position in terms of the skills, training, and character of the candidates required for each position. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Recruiting and Hiring S/w Personnel Recruiting: • The HR department should be provided with the specifics for each open position . • The initial screening of the applicants may be performed by professional recruiters or by the personnel department. • Spmr should prepare the recruiters of what is expected in each position i.e. go over the specific needs. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Recruiting and Hiring S/w Personnel Hiring: • The actual interview may take place in several stages i.e., phone conversation, conference call, off site interview, on site interview. • Spmr and members of the interview team should listen to the candidate and assess that person’s qualifications, specific skills and personal traits. • What are some of the potential questions during the interview? • If the spmr decides to conduct a second round of interviews, then the candidate should be someone the spmr is willing to hire. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Recruiting and Hiring S/w Personnel Hiring cont: • If the parties are interested after the follow-up interview an offer should be made. • The immediate offer is often made verbally for those companies that require drug or other substance clearances before final hiring. • The offer letter should contain: • Description of the position • Brief description of the tasks • The total compensation package, including a reference to any documents that explain the details CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Recruiting and Hiring S/w Personnel Bringing people on board: • Once the candidate accepts the offer, the spmr needs to prepare for that person to be brought on board to the project as smoothly as possible. • What are the items needed before the arrival of the new employee? • Spmr need to prepare the other team members for the arrival of a new employee. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Processes • In addition to hiring new employees, other new resources necessary for the s/w project must be considered, acquired, established, and installed during the organizing phase. • The process used to develop the s/w must be clearly defined. That is, the process must be tailored depending on some of the following: • The size and complexity of the project based on the deliverables • The maturity of the organization CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Processes cont • The history of the working relationships of the people • The size of the organization • The goals of the s/w project • Many spmrs refer to the definitions and guidelines from ISO 9000, S/w Process Improvement and Capability dEtermination (SPICE), or the Software Engineering Institute’s (SEI) Capability Maturity Model (CMM) CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Processes cont ISO 9000 • Includes 146 countries HQ in Geneva • Mission – to promote the widespread adoption of international standards, most of which are highly specific to particular products. • Most widely successful family of standards • ISO 9001 specifically addresses the development, supply, installation, and maintenance of computer s/w. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Processes cont ISO 9000 • ISO 9000-3 specifies quality management and quality assurance issues and describes how these quality aspects apply to ISO 9001 for s/w. SPICE • An initiative to support the development of international standards for s/w process assessment. • Has 3 specific goals: CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Processes cont SPICE cont • Has 3 specific goals: • To develop a working draft for a standard for s/w process improvement. • To conduct industry trials of emerging standards. • To promote technology transfer to s/w process assessment into the worldwide s/w industry. • The working draft was completed in 1995 • There are five technical centers around the world including the SEI in US. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Processes cont CMM • Purpose is to promote the assessment of an organization’s s/w process maturity. • Does not address the complete s/w product cycle-specifically, issues related to s/w support, service, and maintenance. • SEI has developed a new model CMMI (I – integration) which is built on and extends the best practices of 3 other models. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Processes cont CMM cont • CMM for S/w (CMM-SW) • Systems Engineering Capability Model SECM, • Integrated Product Development CMM (IPD-CMM) -------------//------------ • Whatever s/w process is chosen, it must be communicated to the entire project organization, and the project team must be properly disposed to follow the process. • Spm needs to ensure that the various methodologies which are to be used are established, communicated and implemented. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Processes cont Process Map • There is a need to map the overall process to clearly list the activities carried out with in each step, and to explain any relationships among the steps. See next slide: Fig. 7.1 P. 146. • Diagram: • For waterfall-like process • Arrows show the flow of activities. • Dotted arrows indicate the potential for backward flow. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02

Processes cont Process Map cont • The conditions for the successful completion or the exit criteria of a step, which allow the work flow to continue to the next step, need to be provided as a companion to the process map. • Typical exit criteria from the design process: • All the functional and nonfunctional reqs. are designed including the following: • The user interfaces and workflow • The systems and communication interfaces • Database and file structure • Special constraints: performance, security, backup/recovery, etc. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Processes cont Process Map cont • Typical exit criteria from the design process cont: • All of the design is documented and represented in the preciously specified format and language. • The design document is stored in a configuration management tool. • The design document is reviewed and all errors found have been fixed and captured in the updated design document. • The defined exit criteria for the process steps provide a management and a team approach to controlling the flow of activities. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Processes cont Process Map cont • Note there may be overlap in the activities especially from teams that are facing schedule pressure such as the coding team. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
Processes cont H.W. Create an overall project process map for the USDP using the diagrams in the handout. CEN 4021 Class 15 - 03/02
