My Cred. • I am a recovering High School teacher (all sciences for grades 9-12 at Learning Alternatives for 11 years) • I currently teach 7th science and 8th grade STEM at WWMS • I was honored as Spring Lake Park, District 16’s Teacher of the Year in 2012 and have been nominated for the MN Teacher of the Year and PAEMST • I am a founding member of Learning Reimagined Charter School • I am the NorthEast Metro Regional Director for MAAP (though I pass the baton today) • I have received over $48,000 in grants from local, regional and national organizations to support the learners in my classroom and community. • My students have consistently been on par with or exceeded students in the traditional setting on common assessments at the district and state level
STEM • Science • A way of looking at the natural world • Technology • Anything man made – usually to solve a problem • Engineering • The process of design and redesign • Math • Numerical literacy
Example lessons I selected each of these lessons because they are incredibly inexpensive! • Helicopter challenge - variables, measurement, graphing data • Wind blown vehicle challenge – design, communicating results • The Brain and Concussions – learning how we learn, anat/ phys, service projects • Mousetrap cars – force, motion, distance, etc
Helicopter challenge Why I like this lesson: It is super inexpensive!! Easy way to assess mastery of measurement and variables You can change the targeted outcome with minimal effort
Wind-blow vehicle challenge Why I like this lesson: No 2 groups get the same materials It literally uses trash to get started Students get multiple changes to revise and redesign The write up
The Brain and Concussions Why I like this lesson • Kids learn about how they learn • It is very personal • There are many service options
Mousetrap Car Distance Challenge This lesson Plan Design Test Redesign
