  2. IMPLEMENTING THE WORLD REPORT ON ROAD TRAFFIC INJURY PREVENTION PROMOTIONS AND CAMPAIGNS IN JAMAICA

Main Points of Presentation • Jamaica has created a multi-sectoral National Road Safety Council to address a very serious road traffic injury problem • But despite several years of campaigns, high levels of death and injury continue to be a serious problem • Therefore we have developed a results oriented campaign with multiple interventions, clear targets and clear lines of responsibility and accountability.

  18. 2009 Activities • achieve the goal of the Save 300 Lives Project to reduce the number of deaths on Jamaica’s roads to under 300 • seek funds to ensure a strong and meaningful public education campaign for the year • conduct research to measure the impact of messages to guide future planning • promote the Road Safety Facebook page • use statistics to determine those areas and months to focus our messages

  19. 2009 Activities • focus on pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicycle riders - more than 50% of the total number of 2008 deaths • commemorate Road Safety Month in June • recognize World Remembrance Day in November at churches islandwide • advocate for improved legislation, enforcement and operational standards
