  1. elibrary USA WHAT IS IT AND HOW TO ACCCESS IT?

  2. Please complete the registration form and the commitment pledge we are now distributing • Your complete email will serve as your logon. e.g.kckbvtn@gmail.com We need to manually register you in a central database, so, please, write the commitment pledge legibly, especially your email. Within a week, a welcome message from eLibraryUSA will appear in your Inbox, along with your personal password.

  3. HOW TO ACCESS eLU: • Go to http://elibraryusa.state.gov (note there is no www in the URL) • Type in your complete email address: don’t forget the @ part of the email – and then type in your personal password in the space indicated. • You know you are successful once you see ALL RESOURCES at the very top.

  4. This is what eLIBRARYUSA looks like: ALLOWS access to over 30 different databases: note top right where you enter your login and password

  5. Once you log in, click on the arrow for resources and select all resources

  6. Once successfully logged in, this is what you will see

  7. Academic onefile: 18,000 titles; over 2/3 in full text • Updated daily! • Goes back to 1980 • To see Title List; click on TOOLS at very top and then Title list – will give individual journal titles indexed in this database. • This will give you an Excel Spreadsheet indicating the exact dates of when a specific journal was indexed and if full text or not. • By clicking on ENGLISH at the very top, one can see the journals in a specific language (French) and then search those journals in French!

  16. In Academic onefile, try a subject guide search – search diabetes and then can limit to therapy.

  17. Note All the subdivisions under diabetes therapy: you can click on any of these subdivisions to retrieve specific results.

  18. One can also create a search alert, alerting you when a new journal is coming out or new results on your TOPIC.

  19. When you click on create search alert, this dialog box pops up.

  24. ADDITIONAL DATABASES STUDENTS AND RESEARCHERS LOVE! THEGale directory library and the gale virtual reference library

  25. The gale directory library retrieves scholarship information; again, opt for advanced search

  26. In advanced search, choose “scholarships, fellowships and loans,” type in the subject you wish to study, gender restrictions, if applicable, and then search

  28. Note that you can export the results of that search to your email: to do this, mark all, click on export list, and type the email address where you want the export list to appear

  29. When you click export list and type your email address, you will see a confirmation below; make sure you write your own personal message so you don’t forget what this list represents.

  30. The Gale virtual reference library has many thousands of dollars worth of reference and research titles available free for you to use -- click on title list to see all the titles

  33. The Gale Virtual Reference Library now has ebooks and travel guides.

Within GVRL, you now have many Options • You can listen to the text and download the MP3 files • You can convert the text to PDF for a prettier look and feel • You can translate the article into French, Spanish or Portuguese. • You can download the article • You can even take the PDF and download to your eReader – iPad or even to your Kindle

  36. How to take a PDF and send to your eREADER • Your eReader can display PDF documents without losing the formatting of the original file. Works for iPADs and Kindles! USB transfer to Kindle. • Send PDF documents directly to your eReader (i.e. via your @Kindle address) or drag and drop PDF files from your computer to your eReader (when connected via USB). Clicking on Share, sends it to another iPad. This can only be done chapter by chapter. • For additional information, please see your eReader's instruction guide

  38. Literary resource center: here is a sAmple search on tonimorrison, sorted by relevance; note that her specific works are discussed on the left

  39. With literary resource center, one can seArch nationality to discover authors –let’s say I was searching for nigerian authors, but did not know specific names. Here is how I would do the search: start with PERSON SEARCH

  40. Similarly, one can do a more complex search: find short stories by african-american authors in the 19th and 20th centuries: this will retrieve specific authors. (Use PERSON SEARCH)
