eLibraryTopic Search Basics 2011-12
eLibrary Topic Search • eLibrary topic search allows users to locate articles and multimedia resources • Relevant to K-12 curricula and user interests
eLibrary Topic Search • Use eLibrary topic search to: • Search our entire collection of periodicals, books, and multimedia • Locate the most relevant information easily using weighted indexing • Find similar content quickly using the “more documents like this” feature • Query within single or multiple topic categories in one easy search
Topic Search Technology Use a powerful index built for K-12 research • Combines our award-winning Homework Central topic tree and advanced semantics software • Based on K-12 curricula and homework subjects • Includes more than 15,000 topics and sub-topics
Complete Indexing Search the entire collection, not a subset • eLibrary provides topic indexing for every source in the database • Indexing occurs daily so you can search even the most current content • Includes maps, pictures, multimedia, and websites • Includes current and archival information
Relevant Results Identify relevant information with weighted indexing • Every article receives three topic terms • A Strength Meter expresses the relative weight of the topics to each other • Hyperlinks within topics allow users to execute new queries based on related topics
Weighted Topic Examples Fig. 1: The last topic features less prominently in the article than the first two topics. Fig. 2: The first topic features more prominently in the article than the next two topics.
Find “More Document Like This” Locate additional articles related to an item in eLibrary • More Documents Like This will locate additional content with the same three topics • In this example, we will locate articles with the topics: hurricanes, introduction to hurricanes, and how hurricanes form.
“More Document Like This” Results Locate additional articles related to an item in eLibrary • Article results are sorted by weighted relevancy to the three topics in our article, “What causes hurricanes?”
Search Within Topics Query within a topic or multiple topics to pinpoint results • eLibrary contains 15,000+ topics and sub-topics • Launch topic search from advanced search or the topic tree page to find your topic • Once identified, add additional limiters such as keyword, media type, date, etc.
Search Within Topics Example Search Within Topic • Browse or search the topic tree until you locate a topic or subtopic of interest • Click Search within this topic once you’ve found the topic you want to search against • The topic is then added to advanced search • In this example, we can now search within the topic, First Nation, Land Claims
Search Within Topics Results Search Within Topic • All article results contain the indexed topic • Article results are sorted by relevancy, in this example, our query was Canada • Article results may also be re-sorted by date, media type, publication, title, file size, or reading/Lexile level
