Model Neurotransmission • Mission: Make a model neurotransmission showing a soma, a nucleus, dendrites, axons, action potential, and a release of neurotransmitters. • Academic Resources: Use your notes and Chapter 3 as a resource • Materials: paper, markers, and string in class. Bring materials from home as well! Bring them Wednesday and Friday! • Your model must depict the following: • Neuron structure: Dendrites, Soma, Nucleus, Axon, Terminal button, Synaptic vesicles • Neural Action Potential: Sodium flowing in, Potassium flowing out, Charge flowing along the axon, The release of neurotransmitters in to the synaptic cleft
Proposaldue TODAY • TODAY, you are going to turn in to me a paper with everyone’s name on it specifying: • (1) MATERIALS you are going to use, especially the materials you’ll bring from home • (2) WHO is going to be in charge of what (group leader, who brings certain materials, who is going to be doing most of the research, etc.) • (3) A DESCRIPTION of the basic design of your neuron • how are you going to depict all of the different parts [specify each part]). • (4) A DESCRIPTION of how you will depict a neural action potential • how are you going to represent the flow of sodium and potassium, • how you are going to imitate electrical flow along the axon, • how you are going to represent the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft/gap)
Instructions(see pgs. 76-79 for examples) • Make a model of a neuron. Your model must depict the following: • Neuron structure: • Dendrites • Soma • Nucleus • Axon • Terminal button • Synaptic vesicles • Neural Action Potential • Sodium flowing in • Potassium flowing out • Charge flowing along the axon • The release of neurotransmitters in to the synaptic cleft
Display Set UP • On a loose leaf piece of paper, • Key: Make a key explaining what each kind of material or color on your neuron represents which structure or process. • Neuron structure: • Dendrites • Soma • Nucleus • Axon • Terminal button • Synaptic vesicles • Neural Action Potential • Sodium flowing in • Potassium flowing out • Charge flowing along the axon • The release of neurotransmitters in to the synaptic cleft • Description: Then explain in your own words and using the key terms how neurotransmission takes place on your neuron. Write largely enough so that someone could read it at a glance.
