What we will be learning today • Today we are going to cover giving CPR to an adult. • What is CPR? • How to give compressions and rescue breaths • What to do in a situation where CPR is needed?
What is CPR • CPR stands for _________________________ • Emergency procedure for manually preserving brain function • Until further measures restore blood circulation and breathing in a person in cardiac arrest. • CPR’s main function is to _______ partial flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart.

Compressions • One of the most important parts of CPR is giving ________________. • When you compress the chest, you pump blood to the brain and the heart • Push hard and fast (rate of _____ times a minute) • After each normal compression, release pressure on chest to let it come back to normal position
Steps for Compressions • 1. ______ at the victims side • 2. Make sure the victim is lying on his/her back on a firm and flat surface. • If the victim is face down, carefully roll them on their back. • 3. Quickly move or remove clothes from the front of the chest that will get in the way of doing ___________ and using an AED. • 4. Put the heel of one hand on the center of the victim’s chest between the nipples. Put the heel of your other hand on top of the first hand.
Steps of Compressions (cont.) • 5. Push straight down on the chest ________ inches with each compression . Push hard and quickly. • 6. Push at a rate of ________________a minute. • 7. After each compression, _________ pressure on the chest to let it come back to its normal position.

Opening the Airway • Ok, now that you have the chest compressions down, next is onto the rescue breathing. • When giving CPR, you must give the victim _________ that make the chest rise. • Before giving breaths, you must open the airway with the _______________.
Head Tilt-Chin Lift • The following steps are on how to perform the Head Tilt-Chin Lift correctly. • 1. Tilt the head by pushing back on the __________ • 2. Breaths Continued… • When you give CPR, you do sets of ___ chest compressions and ___ breaths. • Try to keep on a rhythm with the breaths and compressions, (100 compressions a minute rate.) • Try not to interrupt the chest compressions when they are being done • Don’t take to long with rescue breaths (2 breaths for 1 second each)
Putting it All Together • Now that we have gone over the chest compressions and breaths, time to put it all together. • When performing CPR on an individual, remember to follow these steps in order.
Steps for CPR • Make sure the _______ is safe • Make sure it is safe for you and victim, because you do not want to become the victim. • Check for a response • Check to see if victim is responsive before administering CPR. • Kneel at the victims side and shout to them, ask if they are ok or need assistance?
Steps Continued.. • Get Help • If victim doesn’t respond, get help on way as soon as possible • Yell for help, if someone comes, tell them to dial 911 and find and AED if available • If no one comes, call 911 and start the steps of CPR
Steps Continued… • Check _________ • Open the victim’s airway with the head tilt-chin lift • Check to see if the victim is breathing normally (5-10 seconds) • Look, Listen, Feel • 30 Compressions with 2 Rescue breaths • Keep going until help arrives, or you become tired so someone else can take over
Special Situations • If a victim is gasping, they are not breathing and will need CPR. • If your first rescue breath doesn’t go in, re-position the head to re-open the airway with the head tilt-chin lift.
Masks • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires certain rescuers to use a mask when giving breaths. • May want to use a mask or other barrier device when giving CPR to victims. • Masks are made of firm plastic and fit over the victims mouth or mouth to nose.
