  1. SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF ACHIEVING CHEAP DONKEY HARNESSING

  2. A PROBLEM WITH SEVERAL DIMENSIONS A two-wheel cart gives problems of balance, usually putting the weight forward through one shaft

  3. If the end of the shaft is simply supported by a strap over donkey necks, the weight of the cart falls on the weakest part of the donkeys.

  4. It may work well enough on horses

  5. But donkeys are not the same shape

  6. So a different hitching system is necessary

  7. Only now FOUR harnesses are needed instead of just two and a backstrap

  8. Luckily all four can be of the same, simple, easy-to-make design

  9. But they need to be even cheaper, or users will be reluctant to change

  10. Other criteria must be met, but cheapness depends on MATERIAL for the straps. • It must be: • very strong • absorbent • slightly elastic • stitchable • flexible, though not too much • locally obtainable • and, of course, CHEAP

  11. LEATHER is expensive & a little difficult to stitch LEATHER is expensive & a little difficult to stitch BRAIDED GOATSKIN takes too much time BRAIDED GOATSKIN takes too much time

  12. FIREHOSE is expensive (unless stolen) & very difficult to stitch, also not very flexible BRAIDED NETLON is pretty well ideal

  13. But ! BRAIDING STRIPS OF SUPERMARKET BAGS is very much cheaper. It needs replacing more often, but is appealingly colourful and also represents a use for what would otherwise be an environmental threat.

  14. Indigenous weaving skills are utilized, which can lead to income generation

  15. Local metalworkers also have a market

  16. And of course, comfortable donkeys can do more work for their owners … EVERYBODY BENEFITS !
