  1. CHEM SS1 LESSON NOTE 2 • WEEK: 02 • DATE: 22ND SEPT, 2014 • DURATION: 80 MINS • TOPIC: PARTICULATE NATURE OF MATTER • CONTENT: • What is matter? • Matter is anything that has mass and occupying space. Matter changes from one state to the other through some processes that are illustrated by the chart below SOLID • LIOQUID GAS

  2. Solid – liquid =Melting liquid – solid =Freezingliquid – gas = Evaporation solid –gas = Sublimationgas-liquid = Condensation gas- solid =Compression • Viscosity - This is how thick a liquid is e.g honey and engine oil are more viscous than petrol • Volatility – this is the property of liquid that measures the degree of evaporation • DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PHYSICAL CHANGE AND CHEMICAL CHANGE • PHYSICAL CHANGE CHEMICAL CHANGE • It is easily reversible It is not easily reversible • No new substance formed New substances are always formed • There is no change in the mass There is a change in the mass of • of substances involved substances involved • It does not involve any great heat It involve a considerable amount of • change heat change

  3. ASSIGNMENT: Enumerate the properties of the three states of matter
