  3. Stage II approval on Christmas Eve • MOU led to Stage II approval. This means that • We are now a “real” experiment that can use Fermilab recourses • We can now claim some “real estate” in which to work • Caveat: Subject to Fermilab’s other commitments--please let me know what I need to negotiate. • We are expected to deliver an experiment, not just talk about it. Budget—Continuing Resolution (flat funding) Brad Tippens (DOE/Office of Nuclear Physics) specifically requested our response to three possible scenarios for FY09 funding: • $370k in FY09:  This scenario is outlined in the MOU.  Basically we would proceed with all due speed to get the spectrometer on the floor and taking data at Fermilab. • $150k in FY09:  • The first priority would be to start the design and construction of the Station 1 MWPC at Colorado.  $90k is needed for this.  • Next, is the purchase the Station 4a hodoscopes at Abilene Christian for $30k.  • The remaining $30k would be used either for the Station 4b hodoscopes at Abilene, or if the Japanese obtain the extra funding they have requested (approx. $100k for Station 3x, 4b and 4c hodoscopes) this $30k could be used to fund help spectrometer installation at Fermilab.  The priority would be the assembly of the magnet.  Not having the remaining $220k until FY2010 would result in a significant, but manageable delay in the installation and start of the experiment. Funded Magnet Design Experiment And construction Construction Publications 2012 2009 2008 2011 2010 Timeline Timeline Constraints • Funding cycle • Ability for Fermilab to prepare hall and beam line • Our ability to construct and install spectrometer elements • Tevatron schedule • Collider run is scheduled to end at the end of FY10 (31 Sept 2010) • High intensity protons to E-906/Drell-Yan unlikely while Collider is running • Low intensity protons are possible—excellent opportunity to “shake down” spectrometer/DAQ/Analysis Tevatron/Collider constraints make it unreasonable to push for the experiment to be ready in Jan 2010; however some low intensity running is desirable. KTeV Hall progress • See talk by Chuck Brown • We now have possession of • the counting room to use as office/work space. • Gas shed to begin work on chamber gas mixing/circulation system • Complications: • Liquid Argon (21 t) purification test is planned for 1 month (realistically 3 months) on floor of hall. • Test was to have been completed by now, but not yet started • Discussing other locations for test. (We now have Stage II approval, which we didn’t have when this test was sited.) • Loading dock/Mezzanine level may be used for MICE solenoid test this summer • Fermilab labor to assemble FMag will not be available until Spring 2010! Conclusions and Questions • We did it—now we need to change this from a virtual experiment into reality!!! • Budget Questions—DOE: • By when do Abilene Christian, Colorado and Fermilab need the money? • What cannot wait until March 2009? • How will this impact Summer 2009 work? • Space is being opened up for us to use • What do we need by Spring 2009? • What do we need by Summer 2009? • Lodging onsite? • Experiment can be ready in June 2010, but time is tight • Please think in advance of the resources needed and coordinate it with myself and Chuck.
