What is Gateway Project • Half million dollar grant program to support 50 schools in New England • School district leaders share best practices –activities and help each other solve problems in order to implement the state’s K-12 technology/engineering standards.
Institute Goals • Aiming to inspire the nations next generation of inventors and engineers • Bring awareness to districts about the critical need for STEM education • Begin work for implementing a program k-12
What we did • Form team • Evaluate determine gap analysis of DPS STEM initiatives • Shared/saw best practices • Create a district action plan for implementing STEM education across the district

Dracut Public Schools Goals • Goal I: Write, revise and/or align curriculum Pre-K-12 with state standards. Develop activities for courses that support the district’s mission and goals of offering a 21st Century education to students which provide the background and skills necessary to compete in a technologically advanced global workplace • Goal II:Develop a strategic plan to implement a more robust STEM curriculum Pre-K-12 • Goal III:Vertically align and promote STEM education Pre-K -12. Create bridges between faculty across all curriculum areas/grades. • Goal IV: Procure funding for STEM initiatives. Identify personnel and resources for successful implementation of new program. Provide opportunities for staff training/education.
Dracut Public Schools Challenges • Challenge I:Development of a rigorous/robust curriculum Pre-K-12 with sustainable funding that aligns with district vision • Challenge II:Professional development opportunities for current staff to access training in pedagogy for STEM • Challenge III:Increase STEM capacity Pre-K-12 and further college and career readiness in STEM fields • Challenge IV:Additional leadership and need for aSTEM coordinator to oversee program, identify business partners for outreach, coordinate opportunities for students to engage in outside engineering competitions
