  2. What is an igloo? • Igloos are shelters constructed from blocks of snow, generally in the form of a dome. • Although igloos are usually associated with all Inuit, they were predominantly constructed by people of Canada's Central Arctic and Greenland's Thule area.

  3. How does the igloo act as an insulator? • Surprisingly, snow is a very good insulator of heat. • It is able to store the heat energy given off by the body within the igloo itself, greatly increasing the temperature inside the igloo. • The snow also makes the igloo air tight, preventing convection of the cold air outside.

  4. How does the igloo act as an insulator? • The white surface of the snow is also a poor radiator and absorber of heat energy, thus it prevents heat energy from within the igloo from escaping. • Conversely, it prevents cold air from the exterior from entering too quickly.

  5. How does the igloo act as an insulator? • The igloo is shaped that the door is very low, thus when hot air rises, it stays above the level of the door, preventing heat from escaping through the door. • The dome shape of the igloo also acts as a container for air. Thus the trapped air also acts as an insulator of heat other than the layer of thick snow.
