The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive Server Virtualization & Availability • Factors: • External Disk Requirement – virtual servers (sys), hosted volumes • Replication, Snapshot or Backup/Restore • POSITIONED FOR DISASTER RECOVERY
The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive GroupWise Disaster Recovery Resumption Time/ Criticality of Services 1. Not all applications require the same service level - downtime Recovery Point 2. Not all applications require the same service level – data loss Cost of Solution 3. Not all applications require the same service level (cost, data & time) Full Restore Data Replication System Rebuild eDir Replication
The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive eDir Replication • Development of eDir process (2nd tree) • One-time agent address changes • Live second system running • Requires duplicate hardware Resumption Steps (high-level) DNS changes (ngwnameserver, etc.) eDir Graft IMPACT: Complete data loss
The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive Data Replication Backup and Periodic Restores OR SAN Replication OR SAN Mirroring Resumption Steps (high-level) Changing path statements on agents Changing IP addresses on agents Startup file changes DNS changes (ngwnameserver, etc.) Top-Down rebuild
The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive Full Restore Requires duplicate hardware Resumption Steps (high-level) Requires full system restore Changing path statements on agents Changing IP addresses on agents Startup file changes DNS changes (ngwnameserver, etc.) Top-Down rebuild
The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive System Rebuild Lots of muscle and endurance! Duplicate Hardware Solution One: Partial Restore This solution indicates past email/calendar history is not important. What will be retained are the contacts found in any personal address books, posted items, rules, etc. (anything in the user.db) Periodically (weekly or even monthly), restore the WPHOST, NGWGUARD and user.db directories. This periodic interval will miss users who have been created during the "gap" as well as user passwords changed during this interval. Don't restore MSG databases or OFFILES. A change of the DNS entry for NGWNAMESERVER and other DNS associated for client access is required. Users would have client access as soon as the agents were properly loaded in the alternate location and the change for NGWNAMESERVER was replicated out. They would have the same password, if one was set as the previous login and their account would NOT be "empty". Old email and calendar items would show but would result in an error when opened. New items would be successful. Archives would still function, contacts would be intact and communication would be available.
The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive System Rebuild Lots of muscle and endurance! Duplicate Hardware Solution Two: Complete Rebuild This solution indicates all data in the existing system is not important. By having a copy of the WPDOMAIN.DB and NGWGUARD.DB from the primary domain, allows for a total system rebuild to new servers, populating and linking all accounts to their eDirectory counterparts. The Secondary Domains and Post Offices can then be rebuilt, allowing users to login and have a blank mailbox and a System address book (Novell GroupWise Address Book). In most systems this process takes approximately 1 hour per GroupWise agent. Allowing for a serial calculation of “x” hours equal to the same number of agents within the GW system. That time can be then broken down further as in some cases multiple agents can be rebuilt at a single time (POs under secondary domains can be rebuilt at the same time); reducing the overall time by “y” (using the maximum amount of administrative actions).
The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive Data Replication - BCC SAN Replication OR SAN Mirroring Resumption Steps Business Continuity Clustering from Novell is new technology that provides for availability in the event of a primary cluster outage. Requires data replication.
The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive Data Replication - Virtualization SAN Replication SAN Mirroring Resumption Steps Using a Virtual Server Management application, server instances are stored on external/replicated disk. In the event of an outage services can be resumed manually or certain processes can be automated. The most predominant issue with this configuration is infrastructure addressing (DNS, IP subnet mismatch, etc.)
The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive Reload Runs on SLES 9 or OES Linux • Backing up all platforms – NW, LX and MS. • Disk – 185% of the disk required for the live PO. Defined by history. • DBCOPY • GW POA (only Backs up PO) – brings over in GW format This is used for restores, and does not talk to the live GW system Can spawm an actual Live PO. • This runs similarly to standard backups with full and incremental backups. Tay Kratzer is providing a full Reload presentation on Tuesday afternoon.

The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive GroupWise tips & tricks • CNTRL + SHFT + ALT for GW Archive rebuild (make a copy first) • SPEEDING UP GW: Sort order of mailbox for speed, filing items to folders, etc. • http startup file for MTA (http://ip/settings/startup) - hidden switch • GWCHECK from a browser: http://IP_Address:port/gwcheck • SNMP Stats from the browser: http:// IP_Address:port /snmp • Email access for audit purposes: Copy user database, change password, access account, re-place user database. (see Reveal) • Accessing an archive using FID Editor for troubleshooting (change it to yours) • Disk Check event - stop mail processing before the disk fills up. • View Attachments in Details instead of in Large icons. • Inserting an HTML or image into GroupWise. (F11) • Client Application Startup Siwtches: @U-user_id, @U-?, /ph-, etc.
The Best Unpublished… GWAVACon Exclusive GroupWise tips & tricks • Code rollout ("my way") - **copy** NLMs, Language and LDAP files to a single directory, then drop them into the sys:\system directory of your GW server. This works great for support pack upgrades. • Running multiple GW versions or support packs on the same server: Create a directory structure on the server, place the startup file for the agent and the code version as described above. The below information assume the alternate code is stored in sys:\gwcode directory • 1. Change your grpwise.ncf file to have the load statement point to load sys:\gwcode\gwpoa @po1.poa • 2. Manually load the agent by typing the same load at the server console. NOTE: This load will default back to the grpwise.ncf file if the server is rebooted. • Restarting a POA with minimal to no impact to end-users. (terminating) • How to add context and other information to address books (MTA – Address Book in C1) • Add/edit column view in C1 – shows multiple attributes such as IP, Ports, FID, etc depending on the object type listed.
