What is Salbutamol? • Salbutamol is a bronchodilator drug used for to prevent shortness of breath and treat wheezing caused by breathing problems such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. • It’s common name is known as Ventolin but is also called Albuterol in the States. • It commonly comes in a solution (liquid) to inhale by mouth using a nebulizer (turns the liquid into a breathable gas)

  3. How it was synthesized • Salbutamol is synthesized from an acetophenone derivate which derived from salicylic acid. Hence “Sal” in Salbutamol. • It has was discovered in 1969 and sold for the first time by Allen and Hansburys (UK) under the name Ventolin. • It was approved for use in the US by the FDA in May 1982.

  4. Why Salbutamol is used • Salbutamol has always been used for relief of bronchospasm by opening up breathing passages and relaxing muscles. • It has been discovered that it has other purposes such as building muscle and increasing performance in healthy athletes.

  5. Risks/Side Effects of Salbutamol • Like most drugs, Salbutamol has some side effects and risks: • Shaking or trembling • Nausea • Vomiting • Headache • Muscle, bone or back pain • Fast, pounding or irregular heart beat
