3.5 solving equations w/decimals .56x + .23 = .78x - .42 Solve the same as any other equation; Round at the very end, not before; Answers are very close approximation, but will not always be exact when checking your answers; May use calculators on this section.
3.6 Literal equations • Literal equations are equations w/more than one type of variable • A = LW • D = RT • P = 2L + 2 W • When solving a literal equation, you are trying to get one of the variables alone.
Solving literal equations • A = LW solve for L (get L alone on 1 side) • A/W = LW/W • A/W = L • D = RT solve for R (get R alone on 1 side) • D/T = RT/T • D/T = R
Solving Literal Equations • P = 2L + 2W solve for W • Use the distributive property in reverse • P = 2(L + W) • P/2 = 2(L + W)/2 • P/2 = L + W • (P/2) – L = L + W – L • (P/2) – L = W
Solving literal equations P = Ct + Cr solve for t P = C(t + r) P/C = C(t + r)/C P/C = t + r (P/C) – r = t + r – r (P/C) – r = t
For the quiz tomorrow • 8 SOLVING EQUATIONS • 2 OTHERS • For the test Friday = know all of the properties • If you can do the mid-chp quiz in the book, you can do the quiz
Joke of the day Teacher: Now, Sam, tell me frankly do you say prayers before eating? Sam: No sir, I don't have to, my mom is a good cook.
