Thriller Genre By Brendan Wells
Genre Genre is a French word meaning type of film. There are many different types of genres all with sub genres. To classify a film a certain genre that film must consist of similar character’s, lighting and props etc this is so the audience will know what to expect in this film. The main types of genres are action, comedy, horror and thriller.
Thriller films The idea of a thriller is to “thrill” the audience and keep the audience in suspense and asking questions about the film and directors use lots of different ways to do this. In many thriller films you will normally have a hero or heroin and they are normally on a quest or mission to save a love one or another personal reason. The villain in these films are normally someone you know all along but don't suspect and the hero will be led in another direction and this will also fool the audience. Thriller films consist of both action and mystery, the action scenes consist of car chases fight scenes explosions etc and this is to keep the audience in suspense. The mystery in a thriller film would be the clues the hero has to figure out and also not knowing the villain is a mystery. The setting of a thriller film can be anywhere but are usually found in places like prisons, dark streets and alleys at night. And this is to add suspense and tension for the audience. Thrillers consist of twists to the plot and cliff hangers for the audience to think about.
Sounds in a Thriller film. In thriller films sound is a very important tool to create tension and suspense. There are two types of sounds you can use in a thriller film Diegetic and non diegetic. A diegetic sound is a sound that is from something that you can see happening like foot steps if someone is walking or heavy breathing if someone is scared or tired. A non digetic sound is a sound you cant see on screen like a narrators voice or added music and SFX. In thriller films the music would gradually increase at certain points and this will add tension to the audience. At the peak of the music when its really loud is when something will happen and this could be a gun shot or stabbing or something as innocent as a child opening a door and they all build tension for the audience. Lighting The lighting that is used in thriller films is generally dark and low or bad lighting and this is to add mystery and tension for the audience as they cant see what is going on. Also lighting in thriller films can be used to emphasize objects or people like this image.
Audience expectations. The main thing that an audience expects from a thriller film is to be thrilled. And to do this the director needs to make the audience feel terror, rushes, and confusion. At the end of a thriller film the audience want the plot to unravel and all the questions they were asking in their head will hopefully be answered.
Target audience With thriller films the target audience can and will change depending on the type of thriller film but for overall thriller films. I believe the target audience is around 18-60 I think this because people under the age of 18 might be disturbed by the scenes in these films and also they might not understand the plot and get too confused than what the director wanted. People over the age of 60 might also find these films disturbing as well.
Se7en Seven is a psychological thriller that keeps the audience guessing on the outcome of the plot. Se7en is about detectives working together to catch a sadistic murderer. The villain in this film is an intelligent obsessive man who keeps trophies from his victims. He outsmarts the detectives. In the opening sequence you see a man (not his face) working on a book by adding writing, photos and other items. The opening sequence contains quick cuts and flashes of the images and titles etc , it also has high pitch loud music that is disturbing and uncomfortable to watch. All of this builds tension and gets the audience thinking about the plot and what type of person this is and what he is doing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4thzyFFdvVc
Ideas for opening sequence One of the ideas I had was to have a young girl running through the woods at night holding a camera and seeing it from a POV (point of view shot) she would be being chased by a mad man who captures her at the end of the opening sequence. This is a more horror idea than a thriller. Another idea was to have a sinister man who murdered his victims and then took some “trophy” that belonged to his victims. This would be similar to the style of Se7en. This would be a psychological thrill.er
