Employability Skills • SMART Goals • A Goal is specific, measurable, and has time-targeted objective to be achieved in the future. • The acronym SMART is a way to remember the key components of an effective goal. • Specific – The goal should identify a specific action or event that will take place. • Measurable – The goal and its benefits should be quantifiable. • Achievable – The goal should be attainable given available resources. • Realistic – The goal should requires the individual to stretch his/her thinking, while maintaining some likelihood of success. • Timely – The goal should state the time period in which it will be accomplished. Individuals develop short-term goals (accomplished within in few days or months) or long-term goals (accomplished over a year or few years). The successful achievement of short-term goals often supports the attainment of long-term goals.
Employability Skills • Goal Setting • Goal Setting is a critical component of personal, academic, and professional development. • Successful goal setting involves the development of a SMART goal and an Action Plan for achieving the goal.
Employability Skills • Action Planning • An Action Plan outlines the steps and strategies needed to achieve the specific goals. An effective Action Plan: • Includes clearly defined SMART goals. • Lists the steps or strategies needed to achieve each goal. • Sets deadlines for when each strategy needs to be accomplished. • Uses a timeline or chart to monitor progress. • Considers possible challenges or barriers, and proactively brainstorms ways to deal with or address them.
