What is Technology in Education? In education, instructional technology is "the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management, and evaluation of processes and resources for learning," according to the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) Definitions and Terminology Committee. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_in_education • Which are the different learning styles? • Educational psychologists have described three basic types of learning styles: • visual (through a multi-sensory approach, using graphics, color and • movement) • auditory (lecture-style instruction) • kinesthetic (build knowledge on hands-on experiences) • (Gillard, S., & Bailey, D.,2007, p. 87).
What is online learning? • Online learning is a type of distance education, or formal study, in which teacher and learners are separate in time or space. (Cavanaugh, C., & Clark, T., 2007 p.5).
What is a Course Management System (CMS) or Learning Management System (LMS?) • It is an online tool that allows educators to create and share lessons, and for students to use a variety of resources and learn. • Some of these are free and provide collaboration and communication resources as: www.moodle.org and http://www.rcampus.com/ • Some of the features are: online courses activity modules databases collaboration between communities share and deliver content assessment tools
Instructional gaps that may be filled with an online learning option and support meaningful student learning. • Targets students different learning styles and needs. • Students work at their own pace • Availability and easy access • Variety of resources • Collaboration with other students in and out of the country.
Why some educators may resist the use of technology? • Lack of: knowledge /education motivation tools belief that it will work Why use technology in the classroom? Educators may find: *professional development * literature, visuals and information about new tools and how to use these * distance education * instructional strategies and approaches * communication, sharing and collaboration *it is necessary in education * how students may benefit
