  1. Nika Raskovalova CCr task 1 How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

  2. Conventions are things the audience expects to see in a media product. • No matter the genre, all films have a set of forms and conventions to follow. • Our product used conventions in a way that the visual content could be easily understood and that the storytelling could make sense, while also giving a genre to our opening sequence.

  3. Conventions of horror films Comparing my opening sequence to “A simple favor“ And our opening sequence “The lodger”

  4. Conventions of horror films Comparing my opening sequence to “A simple favor“ There are similar shots that we have used in our opening sequence and the film ”A simple favor “.

  5. Conventions of horror films Comparing my opening sequence to “A simple favor“ The use of a Middle shot/ Close up shot when the main character looks at someone represents their hidden secrets and that they are probably not who they are as their stare is very mysterious.

  6. Conventions of horror films Comparing my opening sequence to “A simple favor“ The Close up in this shot is used to see reactions on the actors face. This is a shot that shows the most emotion from the characters. It is also used to capture detail in an important scene.

  7. Conventions of horror films Comparing my opening sequence to “A simple favor“

  8. Key conventions - sound Horror films are great at using sound to compound the anxiety you feel as you witness events unfold onscreen; a film's score may feature a persistent low hum which only makes the creaking stairs and hushed whispers across a room more unsettling. In our opening sequence we used: • Ambient sound • Added music during editing (tension music on important moment of the opening sequence)

  9. Key conventions - Editing • The suspense and tension that is built during a dramatic and horrifying scene keeps the audience on their toes and coming back for more. Suspense is built on the audience’s anticipation. A quick succession of fast-paced short clips will disorient an audience. • Just as short, fast paced clips can build dramatic tension, extended uncut clips can be used to grow suspense. In our opening sequence we used: • Shot cuts • Quick cutting • Slow pace to create tension • We have also used fast pace to create the feeling of urgency and horror

  10. Key conventions - Mise-en-scene • Newspapers/ magazines • Vegetables, meat • Day lighting • Television on the background • The most iconic prop with the slasher sub genre is the knife • Many films from all sub-genres feature houses as a location • Fake bloody hand • Fake blood • Board game (operation game) • Normal costumes/ clothes – the audience can relate • Apron – stereotype of a typical mum in a family when she is making dinner

  11. Representation of gender, family, age, archetype family • Family – mom, dad, two kids (happy family) • Age (adults and kids) • Representation of gender is shown by a woman being a victim and not a man.

  12. Conventions of horror films Comparing my opening sequence to “The Stepford Wives“

  13. Conventions of horror films Comparing my opening sequence to “A simple favor“ The typical stereotype of women cooking (family dinner/lunch/breakfast)

  14. Conventions of horror films Comparing my opening sequence to “A simple favor“ The close up shot which shoes and brings audiences attention

  15. Representation of gender, family, age, archetype family • Women being suspicious and mysterious • The archetype of a family, them spending time with their kids/ family • The representation of feminism • And the stereotype of women always pleasing men
