The Four Treasures of the Study: • The Four Treasures of the Study are the four materials used in Chinese Calligraphy. They are the following: • Brush • Ink Stick • Ink Stone • Paper
Brush • Brushes used to be made with animal hair such as weasel, badger, goat and rabbit with handles made of bamboo. • Some people make brushes with baby hair.
Ink Stick • The ink stick is a form of artificial ink used in calligraphy. • A picture of an ink stick made in the form of a lotus leaf and flowers.
Ink Stone • The ink stone is used to grind the ink stick into powder, which is then mixed with water in the depression of the ink stone. • This method of making ink allows the artist or writer to control the ink-to-water ratio used.
Paper • Before the invention of paper, bamboo slips and silk were used as writing material. • Paper is one of the most important inventions from China that we still use to this day, although the formation of our paper differs from that of ancient paper.
