3. General Facts Size and Color • By far the most common color is the classic black an tan although the y do come in a wide variety of colors and almost all of these are accepted by most standards except white (our buddy on the right) is automatically a disqualifying trait • Males- should be 24 to 26 inches at the shoulders and weigh any where from 70 to 100 pounds • Females- should be 22 to 24 inches and weigh from 55 to 80 pounds

Temperament and Intelligence • German shepherds were specifically bred for intelligence and are ranked as third in intelligence behind border collies and poodles • They are protective and but even headed and calm usually good judges of situation. • They are confident and fearless. • They should be socialized early as they can be both people and dog aggressive if not properly socialised

Health and life expectancy • The average shepherd lives around to around 10 • The average litter size is about 6-9 pups • Because of there size and the fact that some of them are inbred they can suffer from some health problems that include: Canine hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia,rare blood and bone disorders, and cancer

From wolves to dogs Two Main Theories • Friendlier wolves who scavenged near early man’s campsites received more food , survived and passed on their genes resulting in a process of domestication over time. • Orphaned wolf cubs were nursed by humans. The cubs and their progeny began to breed and resulted in domestication.

Origins of the breed • The German shepherd was derived from older breeds of German farm and herding dogs in the late 19th early 20th century. • German Shepherd-like dogs have been around for at least since roman times if not longer. • These dogs where not standardized in anyway and varied greatly in both appearance as well as temperament, Not just from region to region but even from farm to farm.

Captain Max von Stephanitz • In the late 1890’s a German cavalry officer of noble background named Max Von Stephanitz decided to create standardized shepherd dog. • April 3, 1899 is considered to be the birth day of the breed Stephanitz bought a dog named Horand von Grafrath who became the forefather of the breed and the first registered GSD. • Later in 1899 Stephanitz created the Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde.

Vereinfür Deutsche Schäferhunde • Started By Captain Max von Stephanitz as a successor to the phylax society to standardize a German national dog. • They created the first registry of GSDs and set the breed standard • This standard was based on stephanitz’s dog Horand von Grafrath. • They held the first dog shows for GSDs not surprisingly von Grafrath won. • The society today ism known as national German Shepherd Club of Germany

Vereinfür Deutsche SchäferhundeStandard Max Von Stephanitz Summary of standard • GENERAL APPEARANCE : The German Shepherd Dog is of medium size, slightly elongated, strong and well muscled, with dry bone and of firm overall structure • BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : The German Shepherd Dog must be even tempered, well balanced (with strong nerves), self assured, totally at ease (except when provoked) and good natured, as well as attentive and easy to train.  He must possess courage, combatively and toughness in order to be suitable as a companion, guard, service, Herding-dog and   Schutzhund • HEAD : The head is wedge shaped and in proportion to body size (length approximately 40% of height at withers) without being coarse or too elongated.  Clean and dry in general appearance, moderately broad between the ears.  The forehead seen from the front and side is only slightly rounded and without any or with only a slightly indicated middle furrow. • BODY : The upper line runs, without any visible break, from the set-on of the neck over the well defined withers and over the back very slightly sloping to the horizontal line, onto the gradually slanting rump. The back is firm, strong and well muscled • Forefeet : Rounded, tight with toes well arched; pads firm, but not brittle; nails strong and dark in color. • Hind feet : Compact, slightly arched; the pads are hard and dark in color; the nails are strong, arched and also dark in color.

AKC Standard CH Kaleef's Katarina Kenlyn 2010 Breed champ Summary of standard • The desired height for males at the top of the highest point of the shoulder blade is 24 to 26 inches; and for bitches, 22 to 24 inches • The neck is strong and muscular, clean-cut and relatively long, proportionate in size to the head and without loose folds of skin. • Chest--Commencing at the prosternum, it is well filled and carried well down between the legs • ForequartersThe shoulder blades are long and obliquely angled, laid on flat and not placed forward. The upper arm joins the shoulder blade at about a right angle. • HindquartersThe whole assembly of the thigh, viewed from the side, is broad, with both upper and lower thigh well muscled, forming as nearly as possible a right angle • Coat The ideal dog has a double coat of medium length

16. Strongheart • Etzel von Oeringen (October 1, 1917–June 24, 1929) more commonly known as strong heart was a canine star of the silent film era • He Originally trained as an attack dog for the German military, but he was discovered by American director Laurence Trimble • Stared in a series of successful films including Whitefang • Strongheart was accused of murder of a young child but was cleared of charges and the child's family was charged with wrongly testifying in court • Strongheart has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and is remembered as one of the first animal stars in hollywood

17. Rin Tin Tin • On 15 September 1918 US Air Corps Corporal Lee Duncan discovered a half-starved dog and her five puppies in a blasted dug-out on the battle fields of France. Duncan took two of the puppies back to the USA, which he named Nannette and Rin Tin Tin • Rin Tim Tin made his first film in 1923 and was the world's biggest box-office draw by 1926. He made $6000 per week. • After he became a box-office star, he merited a private chef who prepared his daily lunch of tenderloin steak - which he consumed as an ensemble played classical music to help his digestion • His heirs continues on as Rin Tin Tin in movies in the 1930’s, a radio show and a 1950’s TV show.

Blondi • Blondi was Adolf Hitler’s German Shepherd • Blondi was given to him as a gift from Martin Borrman • Blondi played an important role in Nazi propaganda where Hitler was portrayed as a great animal lover also because of the fact that shepherd at the time were thought to be closer to the wolf were genetically superior to other dogs. • Right before Hitler commited suicide he tested his pioson on blondi to make sure it was real

20. Narcotics dog • Narcotics dogs are specially trained by law enforcement to sniff out banned substances (drugs) such as marijuana, heroine, cocaine, and crystal meth. • It takes up to a year of intensive training to produce a top quality narcotics dog • It is a risky business for dogs as some become inadvertently addicted or die of overdose through inhalation. • A good narcotics dog can also double as a police attack dog.

Service Dogs • An assistance dog is a canine specially trained to help people manage physical or emotional problems. • German Shepherds were chosen as the original service dog because of their intelligence, keen senses, and unflappable nature. • There are several types of service dogs including seeing eye dogs, hearing dogs, dogs that help the physically handicapped and dogs that help people deal with emotional and mental trouble.

Search and rescue dog • Search and rescue dogs use there superior sense of smell to locate and rescue lost people. • Dogs can sense odors at concentrations nearly 100 million times lower than humans can. They can detect one drop of blood in five quarts of water! • There are two main types airscenting and trialing • Airscenting- use the scent of a specific person to hone in on ther location. • Trialing- use the scent of object like personal possesions to find lost person

23. Sheep dog • German shepherds used as both herding dogs as well as flock guardians • Herding dogs use the sheep's natural herding instincts against them to herd them in an organized flock • Flock guardians protect the sheep from predators
