Learning Goals • LG: Describe and compare the sides and angles of regular and irregular polygons. • Kid Friendly: Be able to tell the difference between what is a polygon and what is not • What I think I know:
Definition • A polygon is a shape with straight sides that are all connected • They are 2 dimensional • Polygon is greek. Poly – means “many” and Gon – means “angle” Polygon (straight sides) Not a Polygon (has a curve) Not a Polygon (open, not closed)
Examples of Polygons – what shapes do you know that would qualify?
Two Types of Polygons • There are two different types of polygons • Regular polygons: All sides and angles are equal • Irregular polygons: Not all sides and angles are equal Regular Irregular
Congruent Polygons • Definition: Polygons are congruent when they have the same number of sides, all sides are the same length, and all angles are the same amount. • The polygon will have the same shape and size, but one may be rotated, reflected or translated • http://www.mathopenref.com/congruentpolygons.html • Click the link to see congruent polygons rotated, reflected, and translated
Practice • Draw the following: • 5 examples of shapes that are polygons (make some more than 4 sided) • 5 examples of shapes that are NOT polygons – state why they are not • 3 examples of regular polygons • 3 examples of irregular polygons • Draw an irregular polygon on a think piece of paper. • Make it your stencil. Trace your stencil onto a piece of paper, but move it around so it looks different (flip, turn it, twist it) • Draw other shapes on your page. You may draw some that look very similar to your stencil • Have a partner circle ALL of the polygons that are congruent to your stencil
