WHO WE ARE “Association for helping and social needing” (APSI, from bulgarian acronim) is a Non-profit and Humanitarian Organization, in Sofia since 2003, for the protection of children's rights, primarily helping children and poor and needing people.
OUR ROOTS • APSIis a satellite NGO in the network of AVSI – Italia, which has been founded in Italy in 1972 and, at present, it is operating in 39 countries in the world, such as Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia, realizing development cooperation projects in the areas of health and sanitation, care of children in difficult conditions, education, vocational training, upgrading of informal urban areas, agriculture, environment, promotion of small businesses, food security, ICT, and emergency relief.
INSPIRING PRINCIPLES • Our MISSIONis to support human development according to the Social Teaching of the Catholic Church, with special attention to education and promotion of the global dignity of every child. This means to help children keeping in mind the right of each and everyone of them to live, to grow-up and to be educated in order to have the concrete possibility of coming to a better state in social life.
METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH • CENTRALITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL:The person is the center of any development program, the purpose of every project. This means first of all sharing needs with the individual to share the very meaning of life and to be moved by his/her destiny. Failing this, the answer to needs becomes only a self-rewarding good action or a political strategy. The person is seen as a unique, unrepeatable being, who cannot be defined by a social category. • STARTING FROM THE POSITIVE:Every person, every community represents a potential resource, no matter how vulnerable they are. This means valuing all that has been made by people, including their history, their existing relationships, and the experiences making up their heritage. This basic operational principle originates from a positive approach to reality and helps persons recognize their own value and dignity and take up their own responsibilities.
METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH II • DOING WITH:A top-down project is either violent, since not shared, or ineffective and unsustainable, since assistance-oriented. Our approach to project planning and implementation consists in doing with people; that is, starting from the relationship with the people to whom the project is targeted and building with them. • PARTNERSHIP:Development projects are based on real partnerships among all entities active in the particular field, including institutions that are public and private, local and international, thereby avoiding duplications and promoting synergies to optimize available resources.
If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.( Antoine de Saint-Exupèry )
BULGARIA • The Republic of Bulgaria is a state in the Balkans. It borders five other countries: Romania to the north (mostly along the River Danube), Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Greece and Turkey to the south. The Black Sea defines the extent of the country to the east. Its area is 110.000 km² and its population is 7.650.000, with a density of 69 p/km², but divided in two: one side, the cities, big economic centres with a high demographic growth; and the other side, the villages, which are almost depopulating. (for ex. Sofia, 1.400.000 inhabitants, the 20% of the population).
PROBLEMS • The lack of statal aid for the disadvantaged population is increasing the poverty and because of this, children’s condition is getting worst every day, risking defection and social emargination.A research made by the “Agency for children care” says that children in orphanages are 25.000 and that 90% of them are from Rom families, families with more than 3 sons and from lonely mothers.
OUR ACTIVITIES • In these years, with the help and the funding of AVSI – Italia, APSI is working over two projects: the main project is in Sofia, in the orphanage Petko Rachov Slaveikov, and the second one is in the Village of Belozem, 150 km from Sofia. We are helping the children with psychological support, foodstuffs, medicine, school equipment, clothing and others.
