CONTINUING NURSING EDUCATION (CNE) CONTACT HOURS Kaiser Permanente recognizes the importance of lifelong learning and ongoing professional development for staff and encourages employees to improve their knowledge and skills by providing various forms of assistance, such as time off with or without pay and full or partial financial reimbursement (kp.org). Conferences • Keep your eyes and ears open for nursing conferences and seminars both locally and nationally. Some allow you access to purchase CDs of the topics if unable to attend in person. • PESI Healthcare offers several local educational seminars annually. Sign up to be on their mailing list or explore and sign up on-line for a conference at www.pesihealthcare.com Online Courses, Webinars, and E-Seminars • Many CNE contact hour courses are available online, either free or with a fee attached. Always check with the provider’s website for accreditation, terms, and conditions of service. • Clinical Library -> Nursing Pathway-> Learning and Development tab->Distance Learning Program • Type “Nursing CEU” or “Nursing CE” in your search engine. • Examples of accredited organizations that offer online courses, i.e. • American Nurses Association • www.nursing center.com • NetCE @ www.netce.com • AWHONN @ www.awhonn.org Journals (hard copy and online) Many nursing journals and online publications offer peer-reviewed articles for obtaining continuing nursing education contact hours, i.e. • American Journal of Nursing (AJN) • Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN) • American Academy Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN) Paid Leave • With less than five (5) years and after one (1) year of continuous employment in the bargaining unit, regular full-time, regular part-time and part-time employees are entitled to four (4) days of paid professional development leave during each year of employment, and six (6) days after 5 years of continuous service (Hawaii Nurses’ Association Labor contract). See your labor contract for further details. • It can be difficult for your manager to allow more than one nurse to attend a education class at a time, so submit your request early. • You can obtain Contact Hour credits three ways: Journals, Seminars/Conferences, and web-based training.
