Catalysts A presentation by Will Churchyard Olly Sullivan
What is a Catalyst? • A catalyst is a substance which changes the speed of a chemical reaction due to whether it is negative or positive. • At the end of the reaction, it is chemically unchanged, where it can be reused multiple amounts of times.
What do Catalysts do? • In a reaction a catalyst can reduce the amount of energy that is active in the reaction.
An example of a catalyst in use • Platinum can be used as a catalyst to make sulphur trioxide from sulphur dioxide and oxygen. The molecules of the two gases get absorbed onto the surface of the catalyst. • The two molecules are held close together, so it is quite likely for them to collide with each other and therefore react with each other. • The Sulphur Trioxide then falls off the catalyst resulting in the end product being made.
