Questions • What is the constructivist model? • How does a constructivist model help facilitate learning? • What challenges are commonly seen in trying to implement a school-wide curriculum approach? • What is ANGEL? • How does the constructivist approach, coupled with the curriculum management tool, ANGEL, help support the organization of curriculum across disciplines? What is the Constructivist Model? “An approach to teaching and learning based on the premise that cognition (learning) is the result of mental construction in an environment designed to support that learning.” • North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (2001). • http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/envrnmnt/drugfree/sa3const.htm IUSM – Office of Medical Education and Curriculur Affairs
Conventions of the Constructivist Model • Embed all learning activities in a global event; • Provide multiple entry levels; • Create a legitimate task; • Plan the task to reflect the complexity of the environment; • Sustain and challenge the learner’s thinking; • Support the evaluation of ideas; • Provide time for reflection • Jones, D. (2000). Cabrillo College, Aptos, California. Adapted from Barbara Seels (1989). The instructional design movement in educational technology. How Does a Constructivist Model Help Facilitate Learning? • It allows you to understand the needs of your faculty and students. • It allows you to assist them in defining those needs so they may develop attainable goals for teaching and learning. It allows one lead person to coordinate the activities of all faculty toward a common goal. • It helps coordinate the construction of material in a sound pedagogy. • It allows for the evaluation of methodologies in both a formative and summative manner to facilitate future improvements in curriculum.
