Columbus &THE new WORLD -In the year of 1492 Columbus & sailors headed in search of Asia for gold & spices -October 12, 1492, Rodrigo a sailor spotted the white sand (land). Columbus after got credit for finding what now is the Bahamas & the Caribbean Island. -Arriving at the land, Arawaks greeted Columbus & his sailors which then lead some of the Arawaks to become imprisoned by Columbus -Some Indians were killed to death refusing to trade bows & arrows with Columbus & his men -The promises Columbus made to the investors lead for one aim in the 2nd expedition: Slaves & Gold -In 1495 the Europeans went in a big slave raid, gathering 1500 Arawaks (men, women & children) Priscilla Cabrera

The 1st enslavement /color line -In 1619 about a million “blacks” had already been brought to the South America from Africa -Blacks were seen as “helpless,” being that they were torn from their culture & land -African Slavery was said to be the cruelest of the slavery in history; being that the profit of black slaves was immense & the degradation of blacks as humans -Blacks were captured, caged & sold in the Americas -Slaves would jump overboard to drown instead of suffering the tortures -By 1800, 10-15 million blacks were transported to the Americas -In 1639, a law was passed stating; “all persons except Negroes” were able to buy arms & ammunition -Black slaves were getting treated differently than whites slaves -Unequal treatment, oppression, feeling & action all together came into play as racism -In 1741, New York had about 2 thousand slaves and 10 thousand whites Priscilla Cabrera
The monopoly & The minorities -Textbooks in the United States; showed no or little about the class struggle before & after the civil war during the 19 century -The 1830’s -40’s, was known as the period of politics, where the two different systems developed (democratic & republican) -Around this era, the wealthy were moving to the cities, leaving the poor behind to fend for themselves of developing diseases due to unsanitary (hustle) conditions -1850’s; monopoly came into play where the interest was on the side of the wealthy -State legislature were giving charter to corporations to conduct businesses & raise their own money -The priorities the “rich” who ran the country was money & profit & not the movement against slavery -As stated by Zinn, “Money is this day the strongest Power of the nation.” -Organizations were starting to form such as Equal Rights party, riots/rallies were being done by minorities who had no jobs such as in 1837, when 50,000 people were without work in New York alone Priscilla Cabrera
Priscilla Cabreracont. -Mid 1800’s; immigrants from Ireland, Germany, Italy & Russia were beginning to migrate to the United States fleeing the starvation, the suffering they encountered in their home country -Protesting in this era, was on a rise due to long hours of work, low pay, unsanitary conditions, hunger in the work places such as the mills -In 1835, 20 mills went on strike to reduce the workday -In Paterson, New Jersey; the first mills strikes were started by children -In Lynn, Massachusetts is were the largest strike took place in the United States before the Civil War (shoemakers) -The shoemakers were working 16 hours a day, for women making $1 a week & men $3 a week -In 1864, more then 200,000 workers (men & women) were in trade unions, forming national unions were labor newspapers were being put out -July 1863, is when the army began recruiting for the war & where the Conscription Act of 1863 passed allowing the rich to avoid going to war -Around this time laws were being passed to please the landlords & merchants such as the contract Labor Law which allowed companies to contract foreign workers -Leading up to the civil war, the laws being passed were in favor of men of commerce & industries
Injustice of the minorities -After the civil war-1900; steam & electricity would soon replace the working hands of the immigrants (farmers replaced by machines) -The 1st transcontinental railroad was constructed by 3,000 Irish & 10,000 Chinese immigrants who were paid 1-2 dollars a day (& the construction company making 79 million) -The Government was pretending to keep neutrality to main order but in reality they were keeping the interest of the rich -The 14th Amendment stated “nor shall any states deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law” -The 14th amendment, was initially made to protect the rights of blacks but as time passed the 14th amendment was amid for corporations -Schools, churches & literature were teaching the being rich was a sign of superiority & being poor was a sign of personal failure -The end result was keeping alive class anger & at the same time inspiring the younger generation for action in defending their rights -During this era, Eminent Domain was enacted being that the government was able to take land & build railroads -During 1860-1910, the army wiped out Indian Villages to construct railroads -The blacks in the south were being controlled, the Indians being wiped away form their homes & all this being started about 400 years ago when Columbus founded this New World & marking it white men land Priscilla Cabrera
Rudy Acuna & Arizona -In 1969, was when the Chicano Studies Department was established at Cal State Northridge -Students fought for their rights in regards to their studies & sacrificed their liberty to make a stand & have their voices be heard -Before the Chicano Studies Department was established, Acuna stated that their was only 50 students Mexicans who attended CSUN & now more then 10,000 Latinos attend CSUN -In 2010 Arizona passed SB 1070 which allows and is mandatory for police to check immigration status & the HB 2281 which outlaws the teaching of ethnic studies -As Acuna stated these laws were targeting the Latinos, “La Raza studies” -As Acuna stated, “if you don't fight, don't blame anyone but yourself.” Priscilla Cabrera
Arizona congressman gRIJALVA & Arizona laws -The central issue is immigration in Arizona -Grijalva stated to confront the issue both the legal route & the important route -The Governments plays a huge role in people lives & their focus should be prosperity for the people instead of downgrading certain ethnicities -Millions of people living in the United States, working in the United States have no legal status until then the government will not be able to solve the root of the problem -When the Dream Act was passed in 2010, that was as Grijalva stated a “break of the log jam & some momentum towards immigration” -Grijalva stated that we (Government) should not be cautious, America needs bold, initiative to deal with immigration, the educational system and job creation “The instincts to do right for the American people has been lost.” –Grijalva Priscilla Cabrera
Felipe Esparza -Esparzais a Professional Comedian who grow up in the projects Pico Garden, Los Angeles -As a child, Esparza grew up poor& in a bad community where violence erupted often -Esparzas way out was being funny, a Comedian -It took Esparza 16 years to reach success -During the show, Last Comic Standing (which Esparza took 1st place), comments such as ‘You cant understand him, he mummbles ,” The Mexican guy made it through?” -Esparzas jokes are mainly about his up bringing and where he came from -For many Esparza is an inspiration to many young Latinos in regards to reaching for their dreams • If you have a dream, dont give up on you. Priscilla Cabrera
Outlawing Shakespeare: the battle for Tucson mind -The idea that ethnic studies, promoted resentment of a different race/class is what lead TO the HB 2281 bill -Tom Horne viewed ethnic studies as a “racist program” -Aztlan to many young people in Arizona was where people found home in their own hearts that discovered the history of their roots -Ethnic Studies gave students identity, integrating who they are in the US but mainly who they are and what their ancestors did for the United States -Some students in the Tucson School District were called “Hitler Youth,” by Tom Horne by simply defending for what many others people fought for in the past -With ethnic studies, graduating rates were going up, students were becoming leaders -Immigration laws were not being passed because if Latinos were to be legalized, then that would mean more votes in favor of the Democratic party & that one thing Arizona is trying to avoid Priscilla Cabrera
Outlawing Dolores Huerta: Tucson diaries -”Republicans hate Latinos,” is said by Tom Horne to elicit such acts Arizona has taken -This statement by Huerta was pulled out of context by Horne enabling to hide the political attack on immigration -The United States was made up of immigranst except that of the Native Americans -Tom Horne said that Ethnic Studies in particular Mexican American Studies was promoting the notion of Aztlan to seperate from the United States and bind to Mexico -Huerta mentioned that African Americans were the ones to build the White house, many people a unaware of this fact Priscilla Cabrera
