ETSI TC Machine to Machine Introduction to the TC June14th 2010
TC M2M in ETSI ETSI TC M2M: ETSI Technical Committee focused on M2M systems Established January 2009, after 8 months preparation 10 plenaries and 1 ad-hoc physical meeting held, other 3-4 physical meeting before end of the year Very frequent rapporteurs conference calls to progress work Constantly increasing participation and interest on email list Europe, USA, China, Korea and Japan companies represented Open approach, drafts on the open site of the ETSI server 3
The ETSI M2M Challenge • M2M technical solutions are highly fragmented and usually dedicated to a single application (e.g. fleet management, meter reading) • Multitude of technical solutions and dispersed standardization activities result in a fragmentation and dispersed development of the M2M market • Standardization is a key enabler to remove the technical barriers and ensure interoperable M2M services and networks • Multi application and multi technology M2M system is envisage

Where Smart Grids meet M2M • Smart grids needs a reliable and gridwide monitoring infrastructure • “Most utilities don't know that users have lost power until customers pick up the phone and call them” • WASA: Monitoring and display of power-system components and performance across interconnections and over large geographic areas in near real time, to anticipate, prevent, or respond to problems before disruptions can arise. • M2M is about managing a large number of sensor and M2M devices (data collection, communication mediation, lifecycle management, etc. 15

Relationship to Smart Metering,TC M2M involvement Smart Metering
Smart Metering is one of the pillars for SG, butthere are other pillars Source: P. Nabuurs, KEMA, presentation at CEER Workshop on Smart Grids 29th June 2009 23 Smart Metering: flexible demand management • Use smart metering to improve customers awareness: • Show customers their energy consumption patterns • Use flexible tariffs to motivate users to spread their non-essential load • Use smart metering to control customers’ non-essential load: • Control the non-essential load to fit the overall generation profile • Turn appliances on/off/up/down • Use smart metering intelligence to • Control directly from the meter • Allow intelligent, pre-arranged decisions by communicating tariff changes • An application of M2M Smart Grids: flexible power management • Addresses the whole power value-chain
