Are the following scenarios positive or negative examples of nativism? • 11th grade parents request that their children are taught U.S. History by American born Eulau rather than immigrant Adams. • The American President must be born in the U.S. • Immigrants allowed to join the U.S. military before they are citizens. 4. American citizens face discrimination because of their race. 5.The celebration of Chinese New Year, St. Patrick's Day & Cinco de Mayo are banned, but not July 4th. 6. The belief that the crime rate is higher in immigrant areas

The Palmer Raids 1918-1921 • Anti-communist crusades • A. Mitchell Palmer was the Attorney General • 70,000 self professed communists in the U.S. in 1919 • Mitchell began a series of raids against communist organizations & political radicals • They concentrated on resident aliens rather than citizens, res. aliens had fewer rights

Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s • Fought to maintain the dominance of a white Protestant culture • Anti black, Catholic , Jewish & immigrant • Preached racism and used violent fear tactics • Operated openly in the 1920s with a membership of 4 million • Glorified by the movie “Birth of a Nation” • Is the KKK an example of Nativism why/why not?
