What Is Amateur Radio? • Voluntary, non-commercial communications • Provides hours of personal fun and fulfillment • Incorporates self-training in practical technologies • Provides a unique ability to enhance international goodwill • Supports Emergency Communications A great hobby that lasts a lifetime.

  3. A Few Details • No age limits • Includes people from all walks of life • Pass a written multiple choice exam…given locally • No Morse Code Requirement! • Regulated by the Federal Communications Commission

What Does Amateur Radio Offer? • Technology … computers, satellites, GPS, space station communications • Education … learn and teach the technology • Public service … provide critical communications in case of disasters, emergencies, and storms • Wonderful way to meet new friends …”rag chewing” • Competition … contests and award hunting • Fellowship The best way to get started enjoying the hobby is through a good club.

What Makes Our Club Special? • Strong, growing membership • Over 90 members and growing; the largest Ham Radio club in Delaware • Monthly meetings featuring presentations on technical and operational topics • Affiliated with the national amateur radio organization…American radio relay league • Training • Standardization • Technical support • Governmental relations…active lobbying for our hobby Guided by principles of courtesy, fraternalism, and co-operation between members and the overall amateur radio community.

  6. What Makes Our Club Special? • Readiness to support emergencies • Over 45 members are part of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) • Many members participate in daily message traffic nets • Delaware Emergency Phone Net • Delaware Traffic Net Public service is a key element of our hobby.

What Makes Our Club Special? • Supporting Education • Providing training to members via demonstrations, presentations, and hands-on experience • Ongoing relationship with Sussex Tech High School (Mr. Anthony Pirczhalski) • Eagerly anticipate a relationship with Sussex Central High School • Supporting Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs Our activities are conducted to advance the interests and welfare of amateur radio in our community.

We Use A Lot of Computer Technology! • Echolink • Use a standard PC to talk over Amateur Radio • APARS • Build a small device to send short messages and allow your vehicle to be tracked on a PC • WINLINK • Connect a PC to your radio To send e-mail Ham radio leverages the power of the computer to enhance communications capabilities.

What is There to Do? • Experimenting - electronics & antennas • Make your own antennas • Build a radio kit • Try antenna modeling software • Incorporate new software • Experiment with various radio/computer interfaces There are plenty of opportunities to experiment with and implement new technologies.
