Flowers Introduction to Agriculture Plant Science Unit
Flower Structure • A flower develops from a bud on the stem or branch of a plant • The flower is attached to the stem or flower stalk by an enlarged structure called the receptacle • The calyxis the enclosing structure that protects the developing flower bud…usually made up of green petal-like structures called sepals that encase the flower
Flower Structure • When the growing flower opens, the corolla emerges; the corolla is made up of all the petals on a plant • The calyx and corolla make up the perianth, or the colorful head of the flower
Female Organs • Female unit within the flower is known collectively as the carpel • Pistil: female element of a flower; composed of a stigma, style, and ovary • Stigma: the outer end of the pistil has an opening known as the stigma • Style: the tube-like structure that connects the stigma with the ovary • Ovary: the enlarged base where the egg cells (ovules) are located
Male Organs • Male organs within the flower • Stamen: the organ of the flower that bears the pollen, consisting of the stalk and the anther • Anther: a structure at the end of the stamen that produces pollen (sperm) • Filament: the stalk-like structure that supports the anther
Categorization • Flowers are categorized in two ways: • Complete or incomplete • Perfect or imperfect
Complete Flowers • Complete flowers have 4 principle parts: • Sepal: outer part of the flower, cover the bud and protect it as it develops; in open flowers, the sepals are found at the base of the petals and provide support for the petals and help hold them open • Petals: located just inside the sepals; often brightly colored and showy, attract insects which help with the fertilization process • Stamen: the stamens are the male part of the flower located inside the ring of the petals • Pistil: the pistil is the female part of the flower and is located in the center of the flower
Incomplete Flower • Do not have all four principle parts…may not have sepals or petals; the male and female flower parts are on separate plants
Perfect and Imperfect Flowers • Perfect flowers have the stamen and pistil in the same flower • Those flowers that lack either stamens or pistils are imperfect flowers
