  1. Respiratory Physiologist Dr Bruce Thompson Head, Physiology Service

  2. Lung function laboratory • Test in excess of 7000 patients/year. • Simple spirometry – Complex measures of gas exchange and cardiopulmonary exercise tests. • 6.5 EFT perform these tests plus other duties – eg research and development. • All the staff come from a physiology/ Medical physics background.

  3. Factors Affecting Lung Function • Ventilatory function • Lung volumes & capacities • Diffusing capacity • Lung & chest compliance • Distribution of ventilation • Arterial blood gases • Pulmonary blood flow • Respiratory muscle strength • Control of ventilation No single lung function test measures all aspects of respiration

  4. Common Respiratory Function Tests • Ventilatory function • Lung volume estimations: gas dilution body plethysmography • Gas transfer (TLCO) • Blood gas analysis • Bronchial provocation challenge: Methacholine, Histamine, Exercise, Hyperosmolar (saline) • Lung mechanics: compliance, conductance • Ventilatory responses to hypoxia and hypercapnia • Cardio-pulmonary exercise testing
