Introduction • Senate made preliminary approval of the formation of the College of Computing and Information Sciences. • The College will merge two units - the Faculty of Computing and Informatics Technology (CIT) and the East African School of library and Information Science (EASLIS). • However, for the last 3 years, the two units were in consultation with the Department of Mass Communication to join into a College

Justification for the Merger • Based on: relatedness, compatibility, inter-disciplinarity, synergy in mission and objectives, potential for modularization • Baseline resources available: • Number of students, • Number of programmes, • Number of academic staff, • Teaching space, • Library and computing facilities • Other capacity indicators (NCHE).

Institutions involved in the Merger • Faculty of Computing and Informatics Technology • In existence since May 2005. • Established with four academic departments: Department of Computer Science (DCS); Department of Information Technology (DIT); Department of Information Systems (DIS); and Department of Networks (DN). • The mandate of the Faculty is to run academic programmes within the field of computing.

Institutions involved in the Merger • East African School of Library & Information Science • EASLIS has existed since 1963. • Offers training programmes aimed at equipping learners (students) with knowledge and skills in information related professions • School has the following departments: • Department of Information Science • Department of Library Science • Department of Records and Archives Management

  11. Mandate • “A leading computing and information sciences and related professions college engaged in professional, collaborative, entrepreneurial, and innovative training.”

School of Computing & Informatics Technology (CIT) • The School will have four academic departments • Computer Science, • Information Technology, • Information Systems, and • Networks • Established academic staff strength of the School: 274 teaching staff, 64 positions filled. • More staff joining the establishment from among the 47 students undertaking PhD training • The School will be headed by the Dean.

Department of Computer Science • The objective of the Department: to develop professionals with theoretical and practical skills in Computer Science and build a management capacity with a practical orientation needed to link up the Computer Science field with Industries. • The department is a very active center of research. Currently, the focus of research is mainly based on: • Foundations of Computing • Computer Security • Computer Vision • Image processing

Department of Information Technology • Teaches academic programs that relate to the dynamic and changing needs of graduates in an information society; • Advancement of IT knowledge and application through state of the art research; • Support IT-based advancements in both the industry and society

  15. Department of Information Technology • The department undertakes research in various IT related subjects organized in the following research groups. • ICT for Development (ICT4D) • e-learning, • Multimedia technologies • IT policy formulation

Department of Information Systems • The mandate of the department is to teach, conduct research and contribute to community on  areas such as System Analysis and Design, Data warehouses, Databases, Health Informatics, Management Information Systems and Decision Support Systems. • Two dynamic research groups namely: • Simulation and Modeling Group • Visualization group

  17. Department of Information Systems • Main research specialties that fall under the department include the following: • Geographical Information Systems • Information Visualization • Systematic Dynamics Modeling • Simulation in Support for Decision Making • Health Informatics.

  18. Department of Networks • The objective: develop professionals with theoretical and practical skills in the areas of: • Communications Networks, • Embedded Systems Engineering, • Mobile communications and Computing, • Network Administration, • System Administration and • Software Engineering.

Centre for Innovations, Incubation and Software Development • Will be created from the current Department of Innovations and Software Development. • Established in 2006 as a pilot project and has since attracted partnership projects that have made CIT a centre of attraction from different organizations in need of software development services. • The department has won grants from international organizations like the Rockefeller Foundation, Google, Microsoft and others

  20. Centre for Innovations, Incubation and Software Development • Some of these projects include: • MobileHRS, • PHEA (Partnership for Higher Education for Africa) using Epihandy Mobile, • HEITML, • OMEVAC and • OpenMRS.

  21. Institute of Computing and Information Sciences Research • Will be a unit of the College of Computing, Communication and Information Sciences responsible for research coordination. • Current and planned research groups from the two Schools will be coordinated under the Institute

  22. The East African School of Library and Information Science (EASLIS) • It will have three departments and once centre. • These units are described in the sections below. • Information Science • Library science • Records and Archives Management

Information Science • Information science investigates the characteristics of information and the nature of information transfer process, whilst not losing sight of the practical aspects of collecting, collating its dissemination through appropriate intellectual apparatus and technology. • It covers the flow of information, and the means of processing information, addresses the relationship between information, people and society. • It explains the nature, uses and value of information. It is concern with the gathering, manipulation, classification, storage, and retrieval of recorded knowledge. • Information Science puts information as a driving force as it applies technology as a means of delivery. Information Science entails: • Provision of information on demand • Provision of Information anticipated • A user feels the need for information • Information must be put to proper use • It must be availed to proper kind of people those who need it

Library science • This department deals with a macro documents and operations of institutions that involves in acquisition, processing, use and dissemination of information resources. • Academic courses in library science typically include collection management, cataloging and classification, reference services, statistics and management.

  25. Records and Archives Management • Records and archives management is the discipline and organizational function of managing records to meet operational business needs, accountability requirements and community expectations. • It is responsible for the systematic control of the creation, maintenance, use, reproduction, and disposition of records. • The Academic courses taught include: preservation and conservation, records treatment, records management, Archives management, repository management, reprographic services, forms and reports management, inventory management, records appraisal and retention system, management of public sector records, and sector information policy initiatives and developments.

  32. Physical Resources • CIT is housed in 15,000sq meters of space. Its two buildings (Block A and Block B) can accommodate up to 10,000 students in one sitting. • The student labs are equipped with 1,900 computers and other assortment of ICT equipment. • The Faculty also has a fully fledged E-learning studio and a Video Conferencing facility.

Available Teaching Space • Large Lecture Theatres (400Sq Meters) whose sitting capacity is 500 that is, a total of 3,000 students at any given time. • 8 Small Lecture Theatres (200Sq Meters) whose sitting capacity is 200 that is, a total of 1600 students at any given time. • Large Computing Labs (800Sq Meters) whose sitting capacity is 700 that is, a total of 4,200 students at any given time. • 2 Small Computing Labs (200Sq Meters) whose sitting capacity is 120 that is, a total 240 students at any given time.

General Students Labs • 6 Large Computing Labs whose sitting capacity is 700 that is, a total of 4,200 students at any given time. • 4 Small Computing Labs whose sitting capacity is 120 that is, a total 480 students at any given time. • 1 computer Lab with a sitting capacity of 150 students • 3 Computer Labs each with a sitting of 70 students that is, a total of 210 students at any given time. • 1 small computer Lab with a sitting capacity of 35 students.
