What is water pollution? • Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies such as lakes, rivers, oceans, and ground water caused by human activities which can be harmful to organisms and plants that live in these bodies of water.
OR… Simply the contamination of bodies of water.
What causes water pollution? • Human carelessness of where their wastes go. • Littering • Sewage and wastes water • Water that contains harmful bacteria that has the ability of affecting one’s health. • Marine Dumping • Disposal of waste at sea from parts of man made structures such as aircrafts, ships, platforms, ..etc.
Continued • Industrial waste • Type of waste produced by factories, mines, mills, …etc such as toxic and chemical waste • Nuclear Waste • The process of radioactive chemicals from industrial factories or power plants that mix with bodies of water • Oil Spills • The accidental leakage of oil into oceans, lakes, ponds, etc.
Continued • Atmospheric Deposition • When water particles in the atmosphere mix with air pollution resulting in acid rain • Global Warming • The process of greenhouse gases getting trapped in the atmosphere causing heat to increase gradually in land and water • Eutrophication • When rivers or oceans receive/give out to much enriched nutrients which causes algae blooms • Disrupts the food chain and depletes oxygen in water, which kills marine life
What can we do to help • Don’t use a lot of water, you won’t get that clean anyways • Don’t litter, its bad for the environment • Keep a look out for what you dispose of down your sink or your toilet • Fecal matter is convienant when it goes down your toilet but not your trash can • Use environmentally friendly products • Cut up your 6-pack soda rings, they can kill lives • Throw plastic straws in the trash, they can get caught in a whales blowhole
