JIRA and Issue Tracking • Web application that enables entry and tracking of issues • Benefits to the community: • Public access to bug reporting • Transparency to resolution of issues • Accessible knowledge base of known issues • Also can use for feature requests!
Using JIRA • Go to www.iris.edu:8088/jira/ • Start by getting an account • Search issues • Enter issues • Track issues
Search, Enter and Track issues • DEMO • Pretty easy… • Hard part is writing effective bugs.
Writing effective issue reports • Know your audience Both who is going to fix the bug, and who decides if it needs fixing • Choose a descriptive but short title Bad: Rdseed messed up on my file Good: Rdseed has problems reading blockette 071 • Write clear, unambiguous steps Include the OS, relevant environment information (ie no internet connection) Especially include illogical steps - these usually represent untested paths • Explain the effect of the bug, not just the symptoms “Annoying dialog prevents application shutdown” might not get fixed “Application hangs on shutdown” will get fixed
Using JIRA effectively • Good way to communicate problems with DMC tools and ideas for improvements • NOT for data quality problems (Rick - where do those go?) • Please remember that we are a small organization, so some problems may not get fixed immediately. But they might not ever get fixed if we don’t know about them!
