World Lit Paper (Written Assignment) Important Reminders
1,200-1,500 words in length • Quotations ARE counted in the word count • You may bring in unlimited quotations separate from your outline or use your book (without writing in it)
150 word outline due Monday • You may also use the following: • world lit packet I gave you, including the rubric you will be graded on • literary terms definition sheet • active voice handout • How to Use Quotations Effectively handout
Other things to remember: • Underline the title of the work. • Use MLA format for quotation citations: (Ibsen 12) • Use present tense when discussing fiction (plays or novel) • Be sure to call A Doll’s House and Oedipus Rex a “play” not a “novel” • Write your essay in black or blue ink on one side of the paper only
Other things to be aware of: • I will check outlines every day. • We will begin writing Monday, but will use Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday as our main writing days. • Friday we will be getting our yearbooks, but those who need to finish up can do so that day. • If you miss writing time in class due to testing or illness, you may schedule with me to make that time up after school if you need it.
Remember to: • Use your best academic language • Be sure to include discussion of stylistic elements and their effects • Use an attention getter at the start of your introduction • Mention author and title in your intro, and of course, state your thesis.
Lead into your quotations by giving the context first: who is speaking & what is the situation • Use smooth transitions at the start of each new paragraph – be sure your writing flows from one idea to the next • Your conclusion should answer the question, “So what?” meaning: Why are these ideas important? After exploring these ideas, what final conclusion have you come to regarding this subject? • Your conclusion should NOT start with “In conclusion”
How we will handle the daily paperwork • You MUST put your 150 word outline & everything you have written in class in your writing folder each day. These items are NOT to go home with you. • Decorate your folder so that you can easily find it each day. • At the end of each page you write, count the words and circle them at the bottom of the page or at the end of each paragraph (this will aid you when you have to do your final word count). • As you write, number each page so that you can easily staple the pages in the right order on the last day. • Write your name on each page in case papers fall out.
Turning in your final essay • Make sure: • all pages are stapled together in the correct order. • your total word count is circled at the bottom of your last page. • to attach the written assignment rubric from your packet to the front of your essay. It’s the page I gave you that has Criterion A-D on it.
