  2. The following presentation is based on a recent interview with: • Mrs. Pam Gable, Carrollton Junior High School • Associate Principal • Curriculum and Instruction

  3. How is technology affecting the learning process?

  4. “Much research has been done regarding the affects of technology on academic performance. Most of what I read is positive regarding the enhancement of student performance. Certainly, the appropriate use of Promethean Boards, Smart Boards, on-line learning opportunities, interactive hand-held devices—have enhanced student learning through the immediate access of information. In today’s world, it is important for students to be aware of the latest trends and know how to access the information in a much more timely manner than more traditional methods.”

  5. What is your definition of technological literacy?

  6. “Technological literacy is the ability to understand and utilize technology and its varied purposes. In the educational setting, students should become competent in basic technology as they progress through school. The International Society for Technology in Education has set national standards (NETS) for this purpose.”

  7. When you hear the phrase “technology integration”, what does it mean to you?

  8. “Technology integration should be a seamless infusion of technology utilized in the classroom for the purpose of enhancing learning and achievement.”

  9. How do you identify the “key players” in the technology integration process and get them to “buy into” what you are trying to accomplish?

  10. “Identifying the ‘key players’ is easy…anyone who is a stakeholder in a child’s education. Getting ‘buy-in’ is accomplished through assuring an understanding of HOW the technology can enhance learning or give stakeholders (teachers, administrators, parents) immediate feedback regarding the evidence of understanding provided by a student. Everyone is interested in how to appropriately utilize the technology where time and effort is maximized (as opposed to hindered).”

  11. What principles should guide your approach for integrating technology into instruction?

  12. “The technology should be the most current • Teachers should have an opportunity to receive professional development and training • Administrators should give teachers the opportunity for ongoing feedback regarding the technology • The technology should be integrated seamlessly into the classroom learning processes • Technical support should be available when needed”

  13. When can you expect technology to be effective?

  14. “Technology must be utilized appropriately within the classroom by a well trained individual to be effective. Misuse of technology can actually hinder the learning process. Ongoing technical support is also important to teachers wishing to continue the use of technology in their classrooms.”

  15. What makes the difference between successful technology integration and a failed attempt?

  16. “It is essential that current technology be purchased; adequate professional learning opportunities be made available to teachers; and continued technical support be available. When teachers feel that they have no support if something goes wrong, the technology integration will not be successful and equipment and tools will be set aside…unused.”
