Welcoming the King – Mk.11:1-13:37 1. Recognising the humble King a. An enthusiastic but fickle response -11:1-10. The crowd failed to see:- 1. What kind of Messiah – Zech.9:9 2. What sort of salvation b. A rejection of Jesus 1. Failure to bear the fruit of faith -11:12-21; 12:38-40 2. Wanting to kill Jesus – 11:18; 12:1-12 3. Questioning Jesus’ authority – 11:27-33 4. Trying to trap Jesus – 12:13-27
c. Seeking the truth – 12:28-34 Jesus sums up a life of faith:- 1. Loving God with all your being – v.29,30 cf.12:41-44 ; 14:1-11 2. Love your neighbour as yourself – v.31 Our faith is expressed in our praying – 11:22-25 a. Trust in God b. Willingness to forgive others
2. Being ready for the Great King – Ch.13 The signs Jesus speaks of:- a. Apply from 1st century through to Jesus’s return b. Are to keep us alert –v.5,9,14,23,28,29,33,35,37 We are not to be “almanac disciples” – v.32 (Don’t try to calculate the date of Jesus’s return) 1. Hold to the truth – v.5,6,21-23 - our authority – 2Tim.3:15-17 - who Jesus is - our character – v.22 ; Mt.7:15-23
2. Be steadfast in times of trouble We live in a world of disorder & upheaval a. National/international –v.7,8 b. Natural world – v.8 c. Persecution of Christians – v.9-13 3. Be Gospel-workers –v.10 a. The Cross – God deals with sin/disorder b. The resurrection – a new beginning c. Transformed lives – 2Cor.5:17
3. Welcoming the King a. Receiving the King – John 1:10-13 - recognising why he came to our world - trusting in him – v.12 - putting your life under his rule b. Being ready for the King’s return - knowing & obeying the truth - steadfastly trusting in Christ - committed to Gospel-work
